Doja Cat is teasing fans with some details about her next album. In an interview with Elle Magazine before she revealed she needed surgery on her tonsils, Doja said she’s fielding new beats from friends. She told the magazine that the album will be “predominantly rap.”

It’s not clear when Doja will be able to begin work on the “Planet Her” follow-up after last week’s news. She was forced to cancel all of her upcoming festival appearances along with her slot on The Weeknd’s upcoming tour due to the surgery.

Doja Cat Wants to Work With 9th Wonder and Jay Versace For Next Album

DSC03972DojaCat

Last month, Doja Cat revealed on an IG live stream that she’s been in a creative rut as of late. She claimed that she hasn’t had the chance to have fun making music in about 5 years.

ā€œAnd I mean make music like willy nilly, like just have fun and just jam and make some shit. I havenā€™t done that in maybe five years, feels like,ā€ she said.

However, in a recent IG Livestream, the artist shared that her next project has her excited about making music again.

Doja said that she wants her next album to be a 12-song double album; the first 12 she wants to be a “pop-rap” blend and the other 12 consisting of hip-hop. She added that she wants the whole project to be produced by Jay Versace and 9th Wonder.

ā€œNew project. 12 songs. All of them, every fuckinā€™ one, Jay Versace and 9th Wonder,ā€ she said.

After she announced her wishes for both producers to produce for her upcoming album, both 9th Wonder and Jay Versace shared their reactions on Twitter.

“Say what now?” 9th Wonder commented.

Jay Versace commented “brah,” in rĆ©ponse to Doja’s wishes.

How do you think a Jay Versace and 9th Wonder produced Doja Cat project would sound?

Boldy James & Jay Versace ā€“ ā€œThe Versace Tapeā€ (EP Review)

Boldy James is a 38 year old MC from Detroit, Michigan who I first caught wind of with his Alchemist produced 2013 debut M.1.C.S. (My 1st Chemistry Set). The critical acclaim of which that album received would land him a contract with Nasā€™ independent label Mass Appeal Records, but Boldy unfortunately got incarcerated sometime after. Upon being released, Uncle Al would help get his name back out there by dropping the BoldfaceĀ EP last winter & The Price of Tea in China just this past February. Both of which where also widely praised & even resulted in a new deal with Buffalo powerhouse Griselda Records. To mark his debut with the label, Boldy has enlisted Jay Versace for his 4th EP.

After the ā€œPony Downā€ intro, the first song ā€œMariaā€ talks about going from selling drugs to where he is now over a jazzy beat while the track ā€œNu Waveā€ talks about cooking up over a soulful instrumental. The song ā€œCartierā€ with Elcamino sees the 2 talking about having footwork over a rich piano loop while the track ā€œBrick van Excelā€ talks about how it is in the streets will test you over an euphoric beat.

The song ā€œLong Live Julioā€ looks back on his younger days over an old school sample while the track ā€œMonte Cristoā€ talks about whippinā€™ it up over another vintage loop. The song ā€œCardinal Sinā€ talks about being from the east side of Detroit over a slow instrumental while the penultimate track ā€œBentaygaā€ talks about ā€œpitchinā€™ like Verlanderā€ over a delicate sample. The EP finishes with ā€œRoxycontinā€, where Boldy & Westside Gunn talk about being tied up in the dope game over an angelic instrumental.

Not as good as The Price of Tea in China, but still a good follow up. Jay Versaceā€™s drumless production goes over well with Boldy Jamesā€™ gritty street imagery. However, I wish it was longer than just 20 minutes. Nonetheless, Boldy shows himself as a fine edition to the Griselda roster.

Score: 7/10
