[WATCH] Rapsody Speaks To Black Men In New Video ‘Afeni’ Ft PJ Morton

Already classified as a legend, North Carolina’s own Rapsody released visuals to her song Afeni ft. PJ Morton featuring a classic hip hop hook by the late Tupac.  The Roc Nation-signed hard hitter is delivering once again from her album Eve which features songs all named after an influential black woman.

Known for her brilliant bars and moving messages, the natural born lyricist breaks down the relationships between the black man, black woman and child. In the captivating video we witness a young couple in love warp into a single black mother raising her son. Bringing us wisdom and tears simultaneously Rapsody is a true queen in hip hop speaking for a generation of those who go unheard.

[Chorus: 2Pac]
Now  since we all came from a woman
Got  our names from a woman and our game from a woman
I wonder why we take from our women
Why we rape our women
Do  we hate our women?
Now  since we all

[Verse 1: Rapsody]
My brothers (My brothers)‚ I love you (I love you)
I  hate to know some of you treat us like Glover (Glover)
Black card revoked‚ maybe you could use Discover (Discover)
Define yourself, do you feel the same way ’bout your mother? (Mother)
Do you overlook our beauty, but you lovin’ on all the others (Others)
Hope  you teach your daughters all to stay away from suckas
Like yourself if you don’t love yourself
I’m so Southern (Southern)‚ I was taught to feed the soul with or without hot ovens
Here’s a plate, know your hate come from a black man struggle (Struggle)
We all in the same shape, so I know I fit your puzzle (Puzzle)
Either way‚ we got your back, we only pray you’ll be our muscle (Pray you’ll be our muscle)
Strength in the times we all overcome with trouble
Every day we pullin’ doubles for ourself and home (For ourself and home)
My mom and daddy taught me, early on, protect your own (Protect your own)

We never stopped lovin’ you, so turn your love back on (Your love back on)
And I pray you feel the same way as that 2Pac song
We ain’t your hoes or your bitches, trophies, or meant for pimpin’
Recognize a gift from God outweighs a birthday or a Christmas
To protect our lives, you gon’ take it to the limit? (You gon’ take it to the limit?)
Rib of my rib, do you still feel us in ya

[WATCH] Oprah Winfrey Cheers On All-Girl Band From OWLAG

In a clip posted to her social media, Oprah Winfrey is seen cheering on an all-girl band from her school OWLAG in South Africa.  Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls celebrated the success of the 9th graduation class of Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa. In a beautiful and soothing musical piece, the girls of OWLAG played for the founder herself—Ms. Winfrey.
Always uplifting and teaching girls that they can do anything they work hard for, Oprah posted this video to her Instagram dancing and celebrating the 9th graduating class.

OWLAG was born from a pledge by Ms. Winfrey to former president Nelson Mandela in 2002 to provide a world-class educational platform for girls that will nurture a new generation of dynamic leaders. Inspired by Nelson Mandela’s emphasis on education, the Academy has welcomed talented, underprivileged girls to a new lifestyle; a world filled with knowledge, social skills and possibilities, and is proud to maintain a 100% matric pass rate.

Ms. Winfrey’s vision is that the Leadership Academy will help develop the future leaders of South Africa. A College Fund was established to support and encourage these young leaders, and those that follow, on their continuing journey.

We salute the graduates of OWLAG and wish them success on all their future endeavors.

Here’s a throwback the founder’s very first speech to the first graduating class of OWLAG.

NY Congresswoman Introduces Bill To Make T.I.’s “Virginity Tests” Illegal

More heat has come down on T.I. for the comments he made about his 18 year old daughter and “checking her hymen” and now the statement has become an anomaly in the political arena.

New York Congresswoman Michaelle Solages has introduced a bill that would prohibit doctors to perform “virginity tests” in response to T.I.’s statement about ensuring his daughter’s virginity with these physician-sanctioned tests.

According to a report from TMZ, the bill says, “Section 1 of the bill adds two new sections … to the public health law to forbid the performance of a hymen exam on women as a means to ascertain whether a woman is a virgin.” It continues, “[T]he bill stipulates that if someone disregards these rules, it will be considered an act of professional misconduct.”

The Long Island, NY politician wants to make the practice a D felony, with the physicians who administer the tests possibly being charged with sexual abuse.

T.I. attempted to cop a plea when questioned about his statements by Jada Pinkett-Smith, in which T.I., whose real name is Cliffird Harris, said that his statement was nothing more than a joke taken out of context.

It has not been confirmed when the bill will be voted on.

TheSource.com will bring you updates to this story as it develops.

Hitmaka just released the video for ‘Thotbox’ (remix) featuring Young M.A., Chinese Kitty, DreamDoll, Dreezy and Mulatto.

Formerly known as Yungberg, Hitmaka has had one heck of year producing hit after hit proving he’s a producer with a force to be reckoned. Hitmaka’s catalog as a producer has earned over 28 million digital sales and 5 billion streams, stemming from credits with artists like French Montana (“No Stylist” featuring Drake), Chris Brown (“Party” featuring Usher and Gucci Mane), Big Sean (“Bounce Back”), and 2 Chainz (“Rule the World” featuring Ariana Grande). Now back with the remix to his song ‘Thotbox’, he brought the ladies in rap together for an anthem-type track.

Mulatto from Jermane Dupri’s show The Rap Game proves she’s all grown up with her seductive bars and clothing. Young M.A, brings her Brooklyn style and the flow we’ve come to love. Chinese Kitty breaks out her sex kitten flow with straight bars and confidence that makes her a fan favorite. Dreezy can go to bar for bar with the most successful rapper to date and DreamDoll switches up the flow and cadence to the piano keys leaving the song.

[WATCH] JT And Yung Miami Tease New Song And The Internet Is On Fire

Last night, The City Girls teased a new song on JT’s Instagram and it’s safe to say the City Girls are back.

Jatavia Shakara Johnson, known as JT was sentenced to two years in prison for credit card fraud back in 2018 and was expected to be released in 2020. During JT’s incarceration, Yung Miami held it down for the City Girls, securing a number of collaborations with big-name artists like Megan Thee Stallion, Moneybagg Yo, Tee Grizzley, and visuals that kept fans anticipating her partners release.

Now that she’s released, JT allegedly went straight to the studio to satisfy her fans and from the sound of this snippet, the girls will do just that.

With the caption reading…’Don’t think we ain’t coming’, JT and Yung Miami teased a verse off a new song they recorded and the internet is on fire.

DMX Checks Himself Into Rehab: A Personal Story

DMX has has had one helluva year. Known for making heart-tugging street songs and appearing in headlines, we’ve all seen his struggles throughout the years and now he has checked himself into rehab. Reports detail his trouble in the law but not many media outlets and journalists know Earl Simmons.

After being released from prison in January, X was back on track killing shows and making appearances. He recently appeared in GQ looking dapper, clean and ready to take over the world. Word of him working with Swizz Beats and resigning with Def Jam Records gave his loyal fans hope for an incredible new album…and then he checked himself back into rehab.

According to a post on Instagram on DMX”s page it says, “In his ongoing commitment to putting family and sobriety first, DMX has checked himself into a rehab facility. He apologizes for his cancelled shows and thanks his fans for their continued support.”

Back in 1996, I was on my way to being a homeless teenager house-hopping in Harlem when I met DMX who friends and family called D.
I was a manicurist at the infamous African-American mall, Mart 125 and he approached my booth at closing asking for a manicure. He wasn’t famous at that time, but the Mart was known for the celebrities that visited because of its location directly across from the Apollo Theater. I was 17 years old and made a fair amount of money for a teen in high school. I had just purchased a plate of food from upstairs so I told him he had to wait until I was done eating and to ensure I would get the money I locked him in the nail booth and continued eating my food. He thought this was amusing and we began talking about hip-hop somehow and he mentioned he rapped. I asked him to rap and in true form he spit a verse and I was blown away. I did his nails and he became a customer and friend and he was always someone I could depend on. He often came to the Mart to visit the late Icepick Jay at Blackmen’s Jewelers where many of the Ruff Ryders met up to discuss business. During that year I learned a lot from him. Because I was the only girl around that knew hip hop, I would hangout in the studio while he recorded his classic debut album It’s Dark And Hell Is Hotand do whatever girl voices needed for his records. I watched in amazement when he recorded ‘Get At Me Dog’ and ended up punching vocals for an album cut called ‘ATF’ that later became a classic. I would hang out with him and his friend Dame Grease and they planned on taking over hip hop—and they did. In 1997 I finagled my way into the College Of Mount Saint Vincent through a HEOP scholarship and had no one to move me into the dorms. I called D and he and Dame Grease picked me up and drove me to my new home.

That year DMX was everywhere. From features to movies to releasing 3 platinum albums in one year. He was on fire and being the same D I had grown to love.  It was refreshing to see a dude from the hood be himself in hip hop and Hollywood. Even as his fame grew he would show nothing but love and we would show me the same love D did back in 1996. He knew I loved Big Pun and called me to smoke a blunt with them inside Tower Records before a record signing. D was always himself and fast forward to know he still plays by his own rules.

While reports say he has checked himself into rehab, we must not forget the many contributions X has given to hip hop. He releases his pain, love and spirituality through his records and that’s exactly who he is. Many rappers create lifestyles on records and have a stylist create their style but Earl Simmons has always been the realist, most honest MC hip hop has to offer.

Let’s salute him and lift him up and never forget that summer he came in and changed the course of hip hop.

Check out this dope video made to the classic ‘ATF’ featuring Dame Grease and myself. Classic!

Atlas Monroe Turns Down $1 Million On ABC’s Shark Tank For Viral ‘Crispy Vegan Chick’n’

Last night on ABC’s Shark Tank, Atlas Monroe Plant Based Foods turned down $1 Million for 100% stake with 10% royalties for her infamous crispy fried chick’n. In just a few months, Deborah and Jonathan Torres’ vegan non-soy chick’n has sky-rocketed attracting the attention of influencers, vegans, and non-vegans alike. As the healthier alternative to Popeye’s chicken sandwich, Atlas Monroe has created the most delectable meat-substitute dishes that taste better than the real thing!

Last night, Deborah and Jonathan shared their famous chick’n with the judges on Shark Tank and Mark Cuban made an offer to Atlas Monroe to which Rohan Orza counter offered with a number rarely offered on Shark Tank—$1 million. They wanted 100% stake and would give the black entrepreneurs 10% royalties. Standing firm in their position, Atlas Monroe turned down the offer. The company is already selling out of their items immediately when they restock and was offered a deal with a famous retail brand. The two innovators walked away from the money knowing they will surpass that amount in no time and giving up something so valuable would benefit Shark Tank more than themselves.

The Source Magazine sat down with Atlas Monroe to discuss how they became leaders of the vegan chick’n movement, their time on Shark Tank and why you should always follow your heart. We also tasted the chick’n and we see why Shark Tank wanted that recipe….hands down the best chick’n we’ve ever had.

1. Tell us a little about yourself and how you came up with the concept to create such delicious vegan soul food items?

I’m Deborah Torres, the Founder and CEO of Atlas Monroe. A few years back, my father was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. After doing some research on a documentary I had seen, I convinced my entire family to go on a raw vegan and organic diet for 90 days and take walks with my father every day. During this time I started experimenting with plant food flavors and textures. In my research and development, I learned that the combination of certain ingredients and flavors could match animal product textures. I became obsessed and fascinated with this new world of transforming plant foods into delicious favorites like raw lasagna, tacos, burgers, pizzas, cheeses and more! It was a bonus that when my father returned to the doctor after the 90 days we found out he was completely healed!

2. Tell us what it was like to feature you’re already famous ‘plant-based crispy chick’n’ on ABC”s Shark Tank?

It was exhilarating! I felt proud for my team and for my family, more than anything. It was a moment I will always cherish and never forget.

3. What was your favorite moment on the show?

The raving reviews from the Sharks was amazing, but getting to tell my story was my favorite moment. To represent for the culture, for women, for people of color everywhere ‐ to stand ten toes down and be proud of who we are and what we’ve built from the ground up, that was the best moment.

4. How long have you been vegan and what made you make the decision to transition to a plant-based lifestyle?

I have personally been vegan for six years now. I went vegan exactly one year before my father had diabetes and one year before the rest of my family went vegan. One day I was browsing Whole Foods for a (real) chicken burrito in the frozen section when suddenly I had the epiphany to stop eating meat. I just went with it. I went vegan alone and nobody I knew was vegan. I was traveling a lot and couldn’t cook. I literally ate chips and hummus for an entire year! That and spinach with pasta sauce, which is still a favorite healthy go-to of mine.

5. Can you share with us something you learned as an entrepreneur during your time on  the show?

Some people just want to take what you have. It is important to not give in and to not let that happen. After everything you’ve been through, you gotta soar on wings like eagles.

6. What can we expect to see from Atlas Monroe in the near future?

The future is now. Catch us at the grocery store!

Female Camaraderie: Does It Still Exist?

In the latest issue of The Source Magazine #274—on stands now— Journalist Courtney Brown covers the topic of Female Camaraderie. After witnessing many public spats between women on social media and everyday life, we raise the question, do women still support women?

In a world full of drama, cattiness and jealousy sometimes we have to wonder do women still even like women. While we have recently seen various female MC’s attack one another publicly, recent collaborations like Megan thee Stallion and Nicki Minaj give us hope that women can learn to lift one another up again.

Here’s an excerpt from the conversational feature in the newest The Source Magazine.

If you wander into the comment section of any gossip page on Instagram, you’ll bump into a myriad of comments about random women.  ‘That’s not real, she had her body done’…’She doesn’t deserve that’…’, ‘I just don’t like her’. While we are fortunate enough to witness feminists movements and celebrities who push the ‘Girls Rule The World’ theory, it’s also become the norm to witness everyday women tearing one another down.

The birth of social media has morphed into a gift and a curse.  It became a place to create revenue for entrepreneurs at every level also becoming a necessary tool for interacting with fans and promoting new material. The curse? These adored apps have made it easy for anyone with Wifi to voice their opinions without discretion on a platform where millions are watching.

Season after season we witness popular reality TV shows showcasing the breakdown of female companionships. Arguments, and disagreements are generally the format leading to friendships being torn down without any resolution or restoration.  Shade has become a new form of entertainment while insults are hurled, judgements are made and secrets are exposed all in the name of good TV. Cardi B and Nicki Minaj engaged in a very public dispute that sent their respective fans the ‘Bardi Gang’ and the ‘Barbies’ verbally attacking each other through social media.  While history has shown that hip hop fans enjoy a good rap battle, where is the line drawn?

Rapper Babs Bunny from the group Making Da Band and CEO of the female battle league Queen Of The Ring believes there is no line and women are made to feel there can only be one winner.  “I think it’s hard for females to support each other because there’s not too many open spots for us at the top. For so long its only been one or two females popping at the same time. So why should I support you and you might take the spot I want?” In hip hop, women can sometimes fare just as aggressive as their male counterparts and Babs is no stranger to that. “The worst insult I’ve heard in a Q.O.T.R. battle was when one of the girls spoke about her opponent having an abortion at a young age…the way she set it up was so disrespectful and shocking.” Despite the shock value of such vicious bars she insists it’s all fair game.  “There are no rules in battle rap. Only the strong will survive. Anything goes. You are fighting to win—you better hit below the belt!” Babs exclaims. “The girls know this is a sport when they step in the ring. No one likes a sore loser. Just like boxing… you fight, knock someone out and then stand next to each other and give an interview and talk about how great the fight was.”

Mary J. Blige To Star in ‘Power’ Spinoff Series

The Power spinoff is about to be big with the announcement of the legendary Mary J. Blige set to star in the new show.

During the Television Critics Association summer press tour, series creator and co-showrunner Courtney A. Kemp announced that the “first of several” prequel series will be titled Power Book 2: Ghost, and will feature the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul.

Blige surprised everybody by coming on stage alongside Kemp and 50. This is probably the most exciting thing that’s going to happen to me this year,” she said. “I’ve been a fan of ‘Power’ since the very beginning and I want to thank Courtney Kemp and 50 Cent for starting this conversation with me.”

While we all have come to love Mary J. Blige as the Queen of “Hip-Hop Soul”, her acting career had taken off. Blige was nominated for an Oscar for her role in Mudbound.

The sixth and final season of “Power,” “The Final Betrayal,” premieres Sunday, Aug. 25. The series, which stars Omari Hardwick, Naturi Naughton, Joseph Sikora, and Rotimi, is Starz’ most-watched and highest-rated show with an average of 10 million viewers per episode.

Cardi B and Offset Reportedly Drop $400K on Kulture’s Birthday Bash

A party ain’t a party until Cardi B and Offset come through with Kulture. Reportedly, for Kulture’s birthday party the proud parents dropped a whopping $400K on the party. held Saturday night (July 13) in Manhattan.

The theme for the party was Word Party, which is an animated show on Netflix. According to E! News, Kulture received presents such as a Word Party pendant created by Eliantte & Co.

Although the entire New York City was in a blackout, that didn’t stop them from keeping the party going.

“Thank y’all so much for coming to Kulture’s birthday party,” she said. “It was so lit that I lost my motherfucking nail. Let me tell y’all something, y’all made it lit because the fact that I had got there, the lights went off in the party. It was like a whole hour with no lights, no music. But it was lit!”

She continued, “It got lit again but with no air conditioner. So we was literally melting, but people were still dancing, having fun. And then the lights came completely back on. But then they came right back off when we was about to cut the cake. And then they cut the lights back on and nobody wanted to leave. And it’s ’cause of y’all. It was such a fun party. Thank you so much.”
