Biden Administration To Relaunch Project To Put Harriet Tubman On $20 Bill

Screen Shot 2021 01 25 at 11.27.20 PM

Remember when this was actually a plan in the U.S. Treasury? Well, Harriet is back again.

According to President Joe Biden’s Press Secretary Jen Psaki, the plan by the Obama Administration to put historic abolitionist Harriet Tubman as the face of the new $20 bill. According to Psaki, Tubman on the new dubs  “reflect the history and diversity of our country.”

The plan was originally set for 2016, but President Biden plans to expedite the process. President Obama’s Treasury Secretary, Jacob Lew, said the Tubman $20 bills were going to replace Andrew Jackson in a U.S. currency redesign.

The current face on the $20 bill, President Andrew Jackson, had his portrait replaced in the Oval Office by Benjamin Franklin under the orders of President Biden, in an attempt to dismantle the racist history of the White House as Jackson was a known slave owner and staunch supporter of slavery.

Trump dismissed the “Tubman on the Twenty” as “pure political correctness”, but President Biden sees the importance of telling the true history of the Nation.

Black-Owned Bank Rolls Out Wakanda Salute Posing Harriet Tubman Card, Clowned Relentlessly

Black History Month is always a welcome time to learn about our great historical figures, but one bank is getting a somewhat harsh lesson on the proper use of the imagery of our ancestors. Black-owned OneUnited Bank has debuted a card that features the great Harriet Tubman in a pose that should be familiar to many,  but some folks on Twitter have noted that the use of the Underground Railroad conductor’s image in this fashion is the opposite of Black excellence.

According to the bank’s website, the limited-edition Harriet Tubman debit Visa card is part of the company’s intention to celebrate Black History Month. OneUnited commissioned Miami, Fla. artist Addonis Parker to deliver a painting of Tubman doing the Wakanda salute from Black Panther for the card’s front image.

OneUnited writes of the card, “Harriet Tubman not only escaped slavery, she made nineteen missions to bring 300 others, including family and friends, to freedom. She also served as an armed scout for the Union Army and was an activist in the struggle for women’s voting rights. Given her profound impact on American history, she deserves to be placed on the $20 bill.”

The site goes on to note that the card is part of a larger Black History Month initiative and to promote two related campaigns in #BankBlack and #BuyBlack along with a “Right To Vote” programming schedule lined up.

Via Twitter, OneUnited, which is located in Miami, Los Angeles, and Boston, endured some harsh criticism from folks who believe that the idea of Tubman’s image being used wasn’t exactly the best choice.

We’ve included some of those replies below.

Twitter Explodes When One United Bank Introduces The Harriet Tubman Bank Card

So what Donald Trump has shot down the idea of putting Harriet Tubman on a $20 dollar bill. We didn’t need that validation anyway… At least that is what the One United Bank said when they decided to put the abolitionist on their premium Visa Debit card.

Just in time for Black History Month, we get to see one of our favorites on the one item that epitomizes the very system that enslaved the enslaved.

One United Bank is America’s largest black-owned bank and created this card. It is FDIC insured and believes that money earned within the community should help the community. A driving focus of this almost 50-year-old institution is to educate Black people about the $1.2 trillion dollars that make up our communities’ spending power. It also encourages Black-owned businesses to hire people that look like them.

So it comes to no surprise that they would put the great liberator on their card. But why would they have her do the Wakanda sign?

That’s at least what Twitter is wondering. Check out how this prestigious bank got dragged online.

Can’t please everyone. Let’s just enjoy Ms. Tubman and spend some money.

Sounds About White: ‘Harriet’ Screenwriter Says Studio Exec Suggested Julia Roberts In Lead Role

Premiere Of Focus Features' "Harriet" - Arrivals

The film Harriet, starring Cynthia Erivo in the lead role of Harriet Tubman, would have had an incorrectly casted star if it were up to a studio executive. The screenwriter for the film says the exec suggested the very-white Julia Roberts should play the famed Underground Railroad conductor.

The film’s producer and screenwriter Gregory Allen Howard has previously told the tale before that back in 1994 when he first began developing the concept of Harriet, he ran into some roadblocks. Allen’s story was retold in an essay he wrote for the Los Angeles Times where he shared how the executives attempted to turn the project into a debacle.

Allen was the lone Black person in the room in a studio meeting with the person who tried to twist Tubman’s narrative, chiming up when the exec said, “That was so long ago. No one will know that” — this in response to Allen reminding the exec of Tubman’s race.

After pitching the film, originally titled Freedom Fire, to several studios, Allen nearly put the idea on the shelf for good but 2013’s 12 Years A Slave gave him the confidence to try again, given the success of that film and its many accolades made Hollywood studios warm up to the idea naturally.

Also, the overwhelming box office success of Marvel’s Black Panther kicked down any remaining doors and thus Harriet was able to get the green light it deserved.
