In 2018, The Cosby Show Geoffrey Owens was spotted by a fan packing groceries at a Trader Joe’s grocery store in New Jersey. Now he is starring in Power Book II: Ghost as Tariq’s attorney and he is continuing to receive his flowers.

Power executive 50 Cent reposted a meme that highlighted Owens’ transition from Trade Joe’s and back to our screen, saluting his efforts and celebrating those who made it happen. “Yeah the under dog back on Top @iamgeoffreyowens GHOST GLG,” 50 wrote.

While he was working at Trader Joe’s, Owens made an appearance on Good Morning America to thank fans and celebrities who supported him in the moment.

“It’s really overwhelming in a good way,”  said Owens. “I really want to thank everybody out there: family, friends, Hollywood community and the general public for the incredible support, the amazing support, and positivity that they’ve shown for me. It’s quite astounding, it’s very encouraging.”

During that time, Nicki Minaj offered to donate $25,000 to Owens. Once he received the money he donated it all to charity. Shortly after, Owens accepted a role on Tyler Perry’s The Haves and the Have Nots.

You can catch Owens next Sunday when Owens returns to the Starz screen in episode 6 of Power Book II: Ghost.

‘Cosby’ Actor Geoffrey Owens Slides The $25K Nicki Minaj Gave Him To Charity

Array

Former Cosby Show actor Geoffrey Owens is looking out for his struggling peers. The ex Trader Joe’s employee is passing the $25,000 that Nicki Minaj gave him over to charity.

Minaj pledged the actor the $25K after he was getting shamed for handling his business and getting a job in between acting gigs. It’s not like Owens said he was financially destitute so Minaj’s pledge seemed kind of—just saying.

Nevertheless, Minaj did cut the check and Owen is donating said money to the Actor’s Fund.

“I would like to give this donation of 25k to the Actor’s Fund in memory of the late, great Earle Hyman — who played Cosby’s father, “Russell,” on ‘The Cosby Show’ — who lived his last many years and died at the Actors’ Home, (funded and run by the Actor’s Fund),” Owens tells TMZ. “I am extremely grateful to Nicki Minaj for enabling struggling actors to continue pursuing their dreams.”

Since the failed shaming, Owens has locked in numerous acting jobs. Respect.

Geoffrey Owens Finally Gets Nicki Minaj’s 25K And Then Donates It To Charity

Remember a couple of weeks ago when a nut jawn tried to embarrass actor Geoffrey Owens for working at Trader Joe’s. The former Cosby Show cast member became a beacon of Black Excellence for many. What seemed to be an attempt to job shame, actually was an opportunity for the world to see what a substantive Black man really looks like.

He’s just a class act.

Most of us know Owens from the character he played on The Cosby Show. Elvin Tibideaux, the chauvinistic son-in-law of Dr. Huxtable, became a regular on the show towards the middle of the run. His performance on the show made for many a good laugh, as he played an old fuddy duddy who seemed not to be progressive enough for the women in the Huxtable clan. But nothing could be further from the truth. His father was Major Robert Odell Owens was a New York politician and a prominent member of the Democratic Party who served in the United States House of Representatives from 1983 to 2007. He is also a honors Yale graduate, who has taught Shakespeare at his alma mater and colleges including fellow Ivy League institution, Columbia University. And while we could throw out all of his credits and accolades, the truest indicator of his character is how he handled the press that came his away after the Trader Joe outing and what he did with the money that Nicki Minaj gave him.

Owens repeatedly told press that he did not want to work as an actor out of pity, but earn a good role. Next thing you know, this stand up guy (and sometimes stand up guys need a little help) gets the call from Tyler Perry and has the option to be on the hit OWN show, Haves and The Have Nots and according to The Hollywood Reporter will be starring in a new film, thriller Fatale, opposite Michael Ealy, Hilary Swank, Damaris Lewis of BlacKkKlansman, Mike Colter and Tyrin Turner. He also has booked a guest spot on NCIS: New Orleans.

After weeks of waiting, Nicki Minaj finally honored her word and gave him the $25,000 that she told the world she would give him on her platform. He was grateful, but did not keep it. He will be donating to the Actor’s Fund, an organization that helps supports actors when they are not working.

“I would like to give this donation of 25k to the Actor’s Fund in memory of the late, great Earle Hyman — who played Cosby’s father, ‘Russell’, on “The Cosby Show” — who lived his last many years and died at the Actors’ Home, (funded and run by the Actor’s Fund),” he told TMZ.

Young Money’s Nicki Minaj made sure to pull through on her promise to give $25,000 to Trader Joe’s employee Geoffrey Owens. The hip-hop star reportedly donated the stacks to the former “Cosby Show” actor.

According to reports, Owens decided to take the hefty bucks and donate it to a good cause.

Owens made the decision to donate the money, in full, to a cause near and dear to his heart and acting career. Geoffrey tells us, “I would like to give this donation of 25k to the Actor’s Fund in memory of the late, great Earle Hyman — who played Cosby’s father, ‘Russell’, on “The Cosby Show” — who lived his last many years and died at the Actors’ Home, (funded and run by the Actor’s Fund). I am extremely grateful to Nicki Minaj for enabling struggling actors to continue pursuing their dreams.” (TMZ)

A few weeks ago, Nicki announced her interest in giving Owens $25,000.

“This man is a whole f—ing legend,” the rapper said during her latest episode of Queen Radio on Beats 1. “That man is now getting so many opportunities, I personally want to donate $25,000.” Minaj also called out Karma Lawrence, the woman who took Owens’ photo at a Trader Joe’s in New Jersey where he was bagging groceries.
