“Onyx vs. Everybody” is a Short Yet Rugged Improvement from 1993 (EP Review)

This is the 11th full-length album from Queens duo Onyx. Consisting of Sticky Fingaz & Fredro Starr, the first 3 outings Bacdafucup as well as All We Got Iz Us & Shut ‘Em Down are rightfully considered by many to be East Coast classics. They went on to release 2 mediocre albums in the early 2000s before going AWOL, returning in 2014 with the Snowgoons produced #WAKEDAFUCUPBlack Rock was ok & Snowmads was a great follow-up to #WAKEDAFUCUP, but Onyx 4 Life & 1993 were as mid as Black Rock to me. That being said, I was very much looking forward to Onyx vs. Everybody given that Fredro is producing the whole thing.

After the titular intro, “It’s Goin’ Down” opens up the EP with some horns talking about going brazy whereas “Shoot Wit” is a raw boom bap banger calling to raise the hand that the shooters let off rounds with. “Real Evil” ominously opens up about killing people leading into Termanology tagging along for the symphonic “Project Gladiators” declaring themselves as such.

“I Rap Like” works in some pianos & dusty drums showing y’all they still got it, but “Bac Up Off Me” with Harrd Luck is so short that there’s literally no point of it being on here in my opinion. The song “Raze the Crime Rate” returns to the raw street life anthems despite the Ricky Bats feature missing the target & after the “Brooklyn Bullshit” interlude, the closer “Talk in New York” with Big Twins rounds everything out with a fresh ode to the 5 boroughs.

For an EP, I think this happens to be one of Onyx’s best efforts in a while. I wish it was a little more fleshed out & a couple of the features are questionable, but Fredro schools it behind the boards as he & Sticky Fingaz still deliver the hardcore hip hop style they blew up off of.

Score: 7/10

Today In Hip Hop History: Onyx Dropped Their Debut Album ‘Bacdafucup’ 28 Years Ago

Screen Shot 2022 03 30 at 9.15.03 AM

On March 30, 1993, cousins Fredro Starr and Sticky Fingaz and their partners Sonny Seeza and Big DS put out their debut album, Bacdafucup, on the newly created Rush Associated Labels.

Primarily produced by the group’s founder Jam Master Jay, other production credits include The Afros’ Kool Tee, Chryskillz, and a then young producer named Jeff Harris; Bacdafucup was by far Onyx’s best studio LP, becoming certified platinum by the RIAA in just a little over seven months after its debut.

The album’s sure shot singles include the riot-causing “Throw Ya Gunz,” the horn propelled “Shiftee,” and of course, the mainstream favorite of all, “Slam.”

Onyx made their claim to fame with their trademark “mad face,” bald heads, and all black everything. Many copycats came after these guys, but their mark on the game is definitely unparalleled. Salute to Fredro, Sticky, Seez, and a big RIP to DS.

[WATCH] Fredro Starr Talks Potential Onyx VERZUZ Battle and Highlights Opponents for JAY-Z

Fredro Starr Talks Potential Onyx VERZUZ Battle and Highlights Opponents for JAY-Z

Fredro Starr has seen all of VERZUZ battles and talks on social media and chimed in on his opinion with a few battles. Speaking with Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson of Bally Sports during a weekly Bovada Sports Betting Show, Fredro revealed what could come from an Onyx and M.O.P. battle.

Onyx and M.O.P. would be fuckin’ crazy!” Fredro opened. “Like, M.O.P. is from Brooklyn. Onyx is from Queens. We came out about around the same time, we both got that same energy… everybody knows that’s the Versuz that Onyx is supposed to do but I’m hearing that M.O.P. doesn’t want to do Versuz.

“But I’m sure if the situation is right we can get it done. We just have to get it done. They can drop Ante Up and we’re gonna drop Slam! You know what I’m sayin’? They’re gonna drop How About Some Hardcore and we’re gonna throw Throw Ya Gunz on! So it’s going to be — that’s what needs to happen. But… I’m willing to take on Cypress Hill to do an Onyx/ Cypress Hill Versuz; I’m willing to do an Onyx/ Dogg Pound Versuz. I just think that the Versuz stage is great for artists who’ve been in the game for a minute and a lot of people say that niggas ain’t got 20 records which is crazy. I think that Onyx has one of the best stage shows in hip-hop. You give us an hour with anybody on that stage, and they’re going to feel the wrath!”

During his time with Scoop B, Fredro also broke down what would happen in VERZUZ battles if JAY-Z took on Nas, Eminem, or Busta Rhymes.

On Nas and Hov, Fredro stated, “I think Nas got records to go against Jay-Z. I think that when Jay-Z said that no one can touch him in Versuz, I was like… the first person that came to my mind was Nas. That would be crazy to see Ether at Versuz.”

There are tons of Hip-Hop fans who believe that Busta Rhymes would be a hard matchup in VERZUZ. Fredro also believes the same.

“Busta got a LOT of hit records bro. That would be a crazy battle because Busta has longevity in hip-hop. He’s been here before Onyx; like, Leaders of the New School, you know what I’m sayin’? Like, Busta has been in the game for 30 years.” Fredro said. “And that’s probably six or seven years before Jay-Z. Even before Jay-Z got in the game Busta was already doing it. So that would be a crazy Versuz. I think that Jay-Z would have more hit records that people would know but, I think that Busta’s energy on stage would just be incredible.”

On Eminem, Fredro stated, “I just think that Jay-Z would outlast Eminem in a Versuz because I just think Jay-Z is more agreeable to the culture.” You can also hear Fredro’s thoughts on an Eminem and Hov battle below.

[WATCH] Onyx Address Kodak Black’s Claim He Punched Sticky Fingaz In The Face

Last year this time, incarcerated rapper Kodak Black made a stunning claim on IG Live that he punched Onyx front man Sticky Fingaz in the face. To add insult to injury, he even claimed that the crazy baldhead had a fugazi gun in his possession on the day in question.

Fredro Starr and Sticky himself sat down on the No Jumper podcast to dispel the claims made by the “Zeze” rapper. Check out how the 90s legends scoff at the idea.

Onyx’s Fredro Starr Drops Must-Hear F**K CORONA Diss Record: “Cardi B Ain’t The Only Motherf*cker That’s Scared”

Fredro Starr Onyx Clip Coronavirus Diss Song

New York rapper Fredro Starr is fed up. The hip-hop veteran has come through with a hard-hitting diss record aimed at COVID-19’s closest kin – the coronavirus.

Big Facts

This week, Fredro blessed the rap game with his hard-hitting freestyle. In the clip, he’s delivering big facts about the current state of the nation with sports and businesses shutting down over COVID-19.

“Sh*t is real, I’m looking at the news like, ‘What now?’/Coronavirus got everything shut down/NBA, shutdown. Major League, shutdown/N*ggas on a plane getting tested when it touch down/United States travel ban, face covered up like a Taliban/City on lockdown, they just turned the lights off/N*ggas start coughing get sprayed with Lysol/They better hurry with the vaccine, because toilet paper got n*ggas acting like crack fiends/Super markets trashed, stock market crashed”

High-Key Details

Fredro took things a little further. He even acknowledged Hollywood superstar Idris Elba recently testing for coronavirus.

Cardi B ain’t the only motherf*cker that’s scared,” Fredro continues to rap. “Nobody safe we even got my n*gga Idris/They telling lies, ain’t hearing that sh*t – it’s the last days, survival of the fittest/I get mine the mask way/I’m looking at the news like ‘What now,’/Coronavirus got everything shut down”

Wait, There’s More

This week, Detroit rapper Tee Grizzley went online and didn’t hold back on throwing out a positive suggestion for fans dealing with COVID-19 fears. Grizz advised people to focus on bettering themselves as they go through their self quarantines.

“So everybody about to be in the house. Everybody about to be spending a lot more time on social media. One thing I done seen social media do to people is double back on their life and question theyself based off what they see other people doing. You feel me? So I got the best plan for y’all. I got the best strategy for y’all. So while everybody’s quarantining, I want you to focus on everything that you’ve been doing, all the mistakes you’ve been making and come up with a plan on how you can switch up on how you’re moving around so you can have a head start on this sh*t so when the world back up and running, you already know what the f*ck to do to better your life. You can put yourself in a better position. You feel me? Don’t be on social media all day. This sh*t ain’t going to do nothing but bring jealousy – so when sh*t back up, you know what you’re doing and you have a head start. You feel me? I’m about to get me some water and tissues because everybody’s doing that. I don’t know what the f*ck we’re getting water and tissues for but everybody’s getting it.”

Before You Go

This week, rap crooner Swae Lee hit up his Twitter page to promise followers his focus is on wrapping up a new studio effort. He said he would use his isolation to fine-tune his upcoming solo album during the coronavirus crisis.

“I’ll be self quarantining finishing up my album.”
