Meet Atlanta’s Urban Visionary: Carlos Neal on Reigniting FreakNik® and Igniting a Cultural Revolution with Bold Plans for Social Impact!

Carlos Neal FreakNik

Carlos Neal, the driving force behind After 9 Partners, an Atlanta-based Promotional Company, has spent the past five years dedicated to restoring and safeguarding the iconic FreakNik® brand. Carlos was deeply Inspired by the ground-breaking FreakNik documentary showcased at SXSW (South by Southwest) and airing on Hulu for the world on March 21, 2024. Carlos embarks on a mission to honor the cultural legacy of FreakNik and ensure its future resonance.

“I’m thrilled that the Hulu FreakNik documentary is beginning to capture the story of FreakNik,  Carlos remarks, reflecting on his deep-rooted connection to the event and its significance to Atlanta cultural tapestry. FreakNik meant so much to me and the culture of my city. This documentary is just the beginning of a long and exciting journey.“

In 2019, Carlos established the FreakNik Festival Foundation Non-profit, signaling a commitment to celebrate the positive spirit of the 90s-era FreakNik. Emphasizing that this isn’t a reenactment of the 90s FreakNik but a celebration of its essence, Carlos’ vision earned recognition from the State of Georgia for its impact on the community via a health fair and positive economic impact to the City of Atlanta.

Central to Carlos’ revamped FreakNik approach is community engagement and input from key figures in FreakNik’s history. Notably, George Hawthorne, chair of the College Spring Break planning committee, joined Carlos board of directors, underscoring a commitment to learn from the past and shape a responsible future for FreakNik. Mr. Hawthorne stated in 2019, “Had FreakNik been organized like Carlos’ version, I would have voted differently in 1998.”

Moreover, Carlos’s partnership with Ronn Greene, the original promoter and trademark holder of FreakNik, symbolizes a passing of the torch to ensure the brand’s continued celebration and integrity.

With a steadfast dedication to social responsibility, safety, inclusivity, and diversity, Carlos introduces a FreakNik® licensing model to protect the brand’s legacy and foster positive community engagement.

Mayor Khalid of South Fulton says, “FreakNik was a cultural phenomenon that significantly contributed to Atlanta’s reputation. I’m thrilled to see Carlos revive the brand and restore its original mission.”

Carlos’ vision for FreakNik continues like the upcoming FreakNik Reunion on April 20, 2024, hosted by Grammy award winner Killer Mike, to encompass future media projects, including movies, TV series, and national concert tours.

Carlos humbly expresses gratitude to the dedicated individuals who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to revive the brand, recognizing their indispensable contribution to FreakNik’s resurgence. Individuals such aTony Wyzard, Michael Williams of MWP Entertainment, Cassie Cope, Michael “Bull” Williams, Patrick Hall, Demarcus Travis, Jerome Rowland, and many others who have worked tirelessly to revive the brand.

Trina Confirms Yolanda Adams Was Not In 1995 Freaknik Picture

Screen Shot 2022 12 30 at 8.31.43 AM

After a photo from the 1995 Annual Freaknik Festival in Atlanta went viral, names of female artists were thrown around as being in the picture, but the poses and the names mentioned did not match up. One name in particular that was mentioned and now confirmed to be in error, is gospel singer Yolanda Adams.

With the general atmosphere of Freaknik being sexually explicit, it was a real stretch to get Yolanda Adams; fans to believe that she was posing in a botty poppin’ stance during the time her gospel career was morphing into what it is today. Trina, who is confirmed to be in the picture, was still more than three years from releasing her smash single with Trick Daddy, “Nann N****”.

“The Baddest B***h” has now confirmed that Yolanda Adams is not the woman in all black in the bottom right of the picture, much to the assurance of Adams’ fans.

Jermaine Dupri Says He’s Begun Working On A ‘Freaknik’ Documentary

JermaineDupritoProduce'WelcometoAtlanta'ConcertSeriesforSuperBowl

Jermaine Dupri said in a recent Instagram post that he has begun working on a new documentary based on “Freaknik,” the infamous Atlanta spring break festival that started in the 80’s and attracted college students and young adults from all around the country.

Dupri made the announcement in a IG post where he was in a hotel room facing the Atlanta Braves Truist Park stadium.

“This the first day of us shooting for the Freaknik documentary,” Dupri said. “So everybody that missed freaknik, we gon’ show y’all what y’all missed.”

Freaknik started off in 1983 when students from the Atlanta University Center (Morehouse College, Spelman College, and Clark Atlanta University) came together to throw a small picnic in a park near the campus for students who could not afford to go home for spring break.

The event was held annually, and in the 90’s Freaknik would end up growing into an entire festival, with concerts, a basketball tournament, dance contests, and even a job fair. At its height, approximately 300,000 people from around the country would attend the event.

However, by 1999, Freaknik had moved into the neighboring DeKalb County, GA. However, celebrations of the festival would dwindle due to increased police activity. In 2010, former Mayor of Atlanta, Kasim Reed officially banned Freaknik and any Freaknik-related activities.

There have been attempts to revive Freaknik, however, they have failed to gain the same crowd and attention as it did in its heyday.

YOU HEARD THEM RIGHT!!!! Uncle Luke Bringing Freaknik Back To ATL

Most of you do not remember, but Freaknik was probably craziest experience young Black kids ever could have imagined. Originally organized by a group of students from the AUC (Morehouse, Spelman, Clark Atlanta University and Morris Brown), this picnic gone wild was basically Mardi Gras mixed with Hood Block Parties and a dash of Ace of Diamonds. And the news just came in, Luther Campbell aka Uncle Luke, is bringing the ultimate “shake that @zz” back to the “A” where it belongs.  Let’s see if he can make this party comparable to the one that many of a Hip-Hopper from all over the country ventured south to partake in.

On a post sneakily dropped on The Shaderoom’s Instagram, Uncle Luke made this announcement with Da Brat, Project Pat and Lil’ Scrappy. But in the description, the line-up consisted of a hodge podge of 90’s acts that we are sure used to kill at the legendary party back in the day.  It is without a doubt they will bring the same fire in 2019.

To be held, Saturday June 22nd at Cellairis Lakewood Amphitheatre, already confirmed are acts like Bun B, Foxy Brown, Twista, and Kilo Ali. Organizers are expecting over 18,000 people to show up in Atlanta, shutting down the streets like the did in 1994.

Check out Uncle Luke as he breaks the news to fans:

Many not only thank God that social media was not around back then (or some of your favorite politicians would not be in office), but also don’t believe that the energy of the original Freaknik can be recreated. For all of you young ones that have no idea what this is all about, check out this documentary for a quick tutorial on the biggest freak nasty party of the century.  Yes… your mother probably was right there… doing the “Atlanta slide” in a thong.
