Q&A With Connecticut’s Very Own FNX

Hey FNX! Please tell us how long have you been making music? Most importantly, how did you come up with your rap name?

FNX is short for Feenixxx. It was hard to scream out F Double E N I Triple X on stage so we re-branded. As for music, I dropped my first mixtape the Blue Moon in 2013 and haven’t looked back since.

What separates you from all the other rappers in your city and nationwide?

Me being me. I’m already a top tier lyricist and I can rap with anyone. There’s nothing I can’t do. Now I just want to refine my message and make as much dope sh*t as possible. Salute to the good emcees.

In a few words, how would you describe your sound?

Bars, Execution and consciousness. My latest project blends those three dynamics into something unique and nobody does it better than me.

How are you coping with this whole Covid 19 situation? Has it delayed any new music production by any chance?

It delayed touring slightly but COVID hasn’t slowed me down one bit. I’ll be ready to make moves when this passes.

Tell us about your Hip Hop and/or music influences?

Chino XL, Nas, Big Pun, Redman, Pharoah Monch, Crooked I – I could on forever with my the OGs I learned from. Ima student that’s ascended to master. This is a journey to mastery.

Please breakdown the creative process of your new mixtape “The Universal Frequency”. And tell us a little about the album cover concept!

The Universal Frequency was about tapping into something we all could relate to. Love, loss, trauma, connecting to God – these are important aspects of the human experience and I give you those feelings through my pen. As for the album cover, it represents the avatar meditating and tapping into the FNX energy. Dope concept.

Your honest opinion, out of all the songs on the project, which is the one song you feel stands out the most!?

I think the dopest rappers are story tellers. I feel like the elite emcees have signature story telling records and I looked to make something timeless with Claire’s story. That will be on repeat for awhile. Shout out to Factory Billy for the ooop too!

We have to ask, with all this social discourse and revolt, protesting and rioting, exposed police brutality toward blacks and BLM, how do you feel about this? We would love your perspective on the climate we are living in right now.

I feel the best music always represents the needs and experience of the people. Talking about the struggle is nothing new to those who have been paying attention. Public Enemy, NMA, Dead Prez etc have all discussed police brutality. I think the song “Police State” by Dead Prez was ahead of its time.

If it came down to 1 ALBUM only, what underground Hip Hop album would you consider THE BEST OF ALL TIME!!!???……One 1 album you can choose.

Does Heltah Skeltah “Nocturnal” count ? That one is legendary.

Here it is! Our most popular question! What is your definition of “underground hip hop”?

Music free of corporate influence. It has to be innovative and represent something new to the table.

Q&A With Underground Hip Hop Lyricist FNX

We are extremely excited to have featured your mixtape “Barz On Dek” featuring T. Sawyer, Sleep Hollow & Izreal Jakob, being a Hip Hop artist we never heard of, we are extremely honored to have promoted your music through UGHHBLOG! Please tell us who is FNX? Where are you from? Give us some background on your artist name?

I’m from Norwalk, CT and I love the craft of being an emcee. From storytelling to punchlines, my main focus is to uphold the culture and execute. Some people say that’s outdated thinking, but I believe mastering your craft to go from student to teacher, is the best way to prove you understood the lesson. That’s my energy. That’s also the energy of Sawyer, Iz and Sleep. We all were inspired and uplifted by hip hop at our low points and the best way we know how to pay it back is to be conducive to that energy.

I’ve also dropped several projects. As Symon Feenixxx back in 2013, we released “The Blue Moon”, which was my first professionally recorded mixtape (shout out to the Factory Underground and Kenny Cash too!) That record was extremely conscious and still has replay value to this day. After that Kenny Cash and I made the “Who Am I” EP, which was where I perfected being a recording artist. It was also when I shortened my name to FNX. Creating records from scratch, and building sounds with my engineer was an amazing process. Then we released FNXMusic Vol 1 and 2 and I collaborated with artist like Chino XL, Canibus, Chris Rivers, Arsonal Da Rebel and did few classic hip hop beats just to pay homage. That leads us to the recent Barz On Dek project with Izreal Jakob, T. Sawyer and Sleep Hollow. This one is bar heavy and explosive. And my whole team gets busy. Shout out to Underground HipHop Blog for rating it 9/10!

How did you initially get into writing and recording music?

I’ve been writing since I was 10 years old and started recording my own music when I was 14. To be honest -during high school, my mother sister and I got evicted, and had to stay In a shelter. A bunch of craziness was happening during that time and the Only way I knew how to vent was to write. I wrote a lot of poetry, with most of it only meant to be read. But then I fell in love with Hip-hop and wanted to be a master of the craft. Chino Xl, Big Pun, Nas, Redman, OutKast, Heltah Skeltah Mos Def Canibus etc I could go on and on about who I studied attempting to teach myself how be an emcee.

Who’re some artists that inspire you?

Chino Xl, Big Pun, Nas, Redman, OutKast, Heltah Skeltah Mos Def Eminem Canibus etc I could go on and on about who I studied attempting to teach myself how be an emcee. I’ll know I’ve made it when I get them to be fans of FNX lol

When people listen to the songs, what do you want them to take away from it?

Well I make different songs for Different purposes. The music on Barz On Dek is high energy and explosive. A lot of unnecessarily crazy punchlines lol but it’s so dope. And if you like that kind of music, your going to keep it rotation for awhile. Thats the product of Sleep Iz and I forming like Voltron and going in. On my solo project is where I will get into consciousness and story telling. Songs like Monsters, Whats Evil, Young Black Males and Dopefiend are what you can expect, and my solo project will raise the bar. It’s heavy replay value.

You recently dropped “Barz On Dek” with T. Sawyer, Sleep Hollow & Izreal Jakob across all streaming platforms! Please give us some background on that project!? Could you tell me the inspiration behind the project and artwork?

As I said before , The Barz On Dek project was just about a few dope emcees coming together to make something unique. Sleep, Iz, Sawyer and myself all have a different style, but when we blend them together we created something fresh. We also are huge students of the culture so there’s a heavy Wu influence.

What else can we expect from you in 2020?

More music, more videos, and more content. I’m also going to destroy a few freestyle platforms.

Our most important question, what is your definition of “Underground Hip Hop”?

Hip hop that doesn’t have the major label influence or resources, yet still finds a way to connect to core fans. It’s the artist’s pure vision.

Lastly, is there any advice you have for anyone trying to set their foot in as recording artists?

Yes, strategize and execute. Just get your process down, keep working and don’t get distracted.  Perfect your process and never look back.

“Barz On Dek” Ft. FNX, T. Sawyer, Sleep Hollow & Izreal Jakob (Mixtape Review)

The latest collaborative release from Connecticut based rapper, FNX, and his fellow artists, T. Sawyer, Sleep Hollow, and Izreal Jakob, is essentially a love letter to hip hop, and ransom note for the game at the same time.

ALBUM AVAILABLE ON BANDCAMP.
Barz On Dek by FNX, T. Sawyer, Sleep Hollow & Izreal Jakob

The project opens with what might be one of my absolute favorite intros of any album ever. It’s simple, but it’s effective and heart felt. Once the music began, though, I immediately got impressions of Wu Tang and Slaughterhouse ciphers. Each of the artists has their own unique style, but they all convey an aggression akin to what you might find in battle rap. They’re brash yet also precise. It’s the type of penmanship that screams of experience and a love for the craft, something that Hip Hop heads with preferences like myself honestly don’t get to witness enough of these days.

The lyrical ability of all four of these guys is top notch. There might be a three or four throw away bars for each of them throughout the entire listen, but with how bar heavy each song is, that’s genuinely impressive and a compliment to the whole crew. The production for the album is solid throughout. There are a whole lot of classic boom bap and acoustic sounds that make up the skeletons and melodies of each beat. The mixing is good, and the artists play around the beats expertly. Honestly, there isn’t a whole lot else to say. I’m probably very biased towards this style of Rap, but I still think it’s good enough to be enjoyed by most people.

These guys do not need to change a thing. Seriously. It may not be for everyone, but if you like Royce da 5’9″, Kxng Crooked, Wu Tang, Forever MC, or Murs, there is a very strong likelihood that you’ll rock with these guys. They have a deep passion for the craft and say that they’re still students of Hip Hop, but pretty soon I think they’ll be considered teachers.
