Tattoos In Sports Video Games Becoming An Issue, Athletes Don’t Own Them

What makes video games great, especially sports-related ones, is the realistic player models thanks to next-generation scanning technology. So now when you play NBA 2K or FIFA, for example, you get every detail including the player’s tattoos, but the body ink that is now the norm is becoming an issue for developers cause the athletes do not own the tats.

Wait… what?

Despite the personal connections the tattoos may have and the fact the athlete might have come up with the idea in their heads, they do not own the ink.

Per The New York Times:

“Any creative illustration “fixed in a tangible medium” is eligible for copyright, and, according to the United States Copyright Office, that includes the ink displayed on someone’s skin. What many people don’t realize, legal experts said, is that the copyright is inherently owned by the tattoo artist, not the person with the tattoos.”

“For most people, that is not a cause for concern. Lawyers generally agree that an implied license allows people to freely display their tattoos in public, including on television broadcasts or magazine covers. But when tattoos are digitally recreated on avatars in sports video games, copyright infringement can become an issue.”

Well damn. This may come as a shock, but the battle for the rights to incorporate athletes tattoos into video games has been going on for some time now. A tattoo artist slapped Electronic Arts with a copyright infringement lawsuit when it used an illustration of retired NFL running back Ricky Williams and his tattoos on the cover of NFL Street. He later withdrew his claim in 2013.

We reported on Solid Oak Sketches suing NBA 2K’s developers over the use of tattoos that it obtained copyrights for in the game. Not all tattoo artist feel the same way, two artists Shawn Rome and Justin Wright who licenesed their work to Solid Oak claim “they had been deceived by its founder, Matthew Siegler, and never desired a lawsuit.”

There is some artist who finds this ridiculous, speaking with the New York Times, Gotti Flores who has spent many hours tattooing NFL athlete Mike Evans said he was “surprised” because he had to give permission for the tats to be used in the game and sign a waiver for no compensation. “Really it didn’t even matter to me. It was dope to have my tattoos on there” he also added.

This all sounds ridiculous, but it’s definitely becoming an issue video game developers are wary of and are tackling ahead of time now.

Odell Beckham Jr. & A$AP Rocky Face Off In New York Stop of The ‘FIFA 19’ World Tour

EA SPORTS FIFA 19 “World Tour” Odell Beckham Jr and A$AP Rocky

Last week the FIFA 19 World Tour kicked in the UK with  Big Shaq, Stormzy taking on Man United’s Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard. This week we head to NYC where New York Giants’ star receiver Odell Beckham Jr. and Harlem’s own A$AP Rocky are next to pick up the sticks.

You can already guess who won this match.

While last weeks no rules game of FIFA 19’s Kick-Off mode was a bit more on the comical side thanks to the antics of Michael Dapaah, this installment is a bit more serious but still features some fun moments. We learned right off the bat the master of the one hand grab was into the world’s game before he shifted into the world of American football.

A$AP, on the other hand, dabbled a bit in sports but surprisingly wanted to play football himself before deciding to just be Pretty Flacko. The match took place at Kith’s NYC office with founder Ronny Fieg in attendance. Rocky immediately informs viewers when it comes to playing games he’s only familiar with board games while Odell put his dazzling FIFA 19 skills to use wowing the rapper in the process.

With New York out of the way that leaves Maluma vs. Martin Garrix in Rio, Brazil, Kimpembe, Meunier, Niska, Alonso in Paris and Liam Payne, Christian Pulisic, Marco Reus and more in Dortmund. You can watch the next episode of the New York episode of the FIFA 19 World Tour below.

EA Sports Announces ‘FIFA 19’ World Tour ft. Stormzy, A$AP Rocky, Odell Beckham Jr. & More

EA Sports is bringing the most prominent names sports and music together with the FIFA 19 World Tour to take on each other in its uber-popular soccer video game franchise FIFA 19

Today the video game company kicked off the FIFA 19 World Tour with the help of Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard, Grime artist Stormzy and comedian, rapper and actor Michael Dapaah aka Big Shaq. The first stop on tour takes us across the pond to London where we see the four take on each other in a no rules game of FIFA 19’s Kick Off mode.

Following London, EA will take the electronic version of The World’s Game to these other stops around the globe featuring these big names:

  • Odell Beckham Jr vs. A$AP Rocky in New York City
  • Maluma vs. Martin Garrix in Rio, Brazil
  • Kimpembe, Meunier, Niska, Alonso in Paris
  • Liam Payne, Christian Pulisic, Marco Reus and more in Dortmund

For the first installment, Stormzy who has bragged about his FIFA skills was definitely getting the side-eye from the “Mans Not Hot” creator Big Shaq cause they definitely got their tails handed to them. In their defense, though they did take on two professional soccer players, so it’s quite understandable why they caught an L.

Regardless the match made for some hilarious banter between them we are looking forward to the other videos from the other tour stops. You can watch Stormzy, and Big Shaq gets schooled in FIFA 19 below.

FIFA 19 On Playstation 4, Xbox One & Nintendo Switch: “The Best Franchise In EA Is Back”

FIFA 19

Yes, ladies and gentlemen of the SOHH and getFRUSH community, the best franchise in EA is back (yeah I said it). FIFA 19 is upon us. Don’t get me wrong, Madden is fun, but FIFA has consistently put out greatness regardless if you like soccer or not.

Not only do you get to take your favorite team to the UEFA Championship, you also get to again build your dream team in Club Creator mode. But, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Here are five reasons you should buy FIFA 19 for your Playstation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch!

1. Alex Hunter Story

Remember Alex Hunter, Danny Williams and Kim Hunter? I hope so, because their story mode has been great in the previous games. And now, it’s coming to a conclusion. Play through their stories and help guide them to the glory they deserve at the highest level. Along the way you are presented with tough decisions, game challenges, and other scenarios which put you in the position of a professional soccer player. How will the story end? Pick up the sticks and find out.

2. Club Creator

You think you can build a championship caliber team from the ground up? We all talk the talk but how many of you actually can manage personalities, finances, and a demanding fan base? Well, this is your chance. You think NFL fans are tough, you don’t know soccer fans and their passion for their team. Give this new game mode a shot as you start from the bottom and have to grind your way through a season handling all aspects of the team from the manager to maybe a disgruntled player.

3. New Shooting System

The shooting system has added a MAJOR wrinkle this time around. Once easy to control, is no longer the case. Skill is definitely involved when it comes to shots on target. Not only do you have to be accurate but timing is EVERYTHING! If your timing is off you can go ahead and embarrass yourself, the announcers will call you out on it too. The volley system has significantly upgraded as well. But, don’t worry the training environment has changed enough to help guide you through the changes. So, if you need time to adjust, you get ample time to do so. It’s a great adjustment to a game which was already great.

4. Career Mode

Much like the other titles in the sports genre, the most popular is the career mode. And this one is no different. From playing as Alex Hunter and his story, to creating your own manager/player, you can lead some of the greatest teams in the world to glory. You think you could lead another team to a 100 point season like Manchester City did last year? Or have your player be the youngest to ever win the World Cup? Here’s you chance to prove your player belongs on the same pitch as Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi.

5. More Control/Creativity

Something which was lacking from previous editions of FIFA was the ability to get creative with your player and how he/she handled the ball. Now, comes something similar to NBA Live’s freestyle stick. Fake out the entire defense with your own unique ‘handle’ on the soccer ball. Can you impress your national team enough to get selected? Or will you end up like Leroy Sane with all the talent but something was missing to be left of the team. Show off your best moves and make sure to post them online so the FIFA world can take notice.

With the finish of the World Cup and the start of the soccer seasons around the world, it’s time to get excited for FIFA 19. I stand by my statement it’s the BEST franchise in EA. Much how we feel about NBA 2K and Madden, is how the entire world feels about FIFA. Anyone and everyone can get in on the fun, I’ll see you all on the pitch/sticks.
