Will Smith Surprises Fans at Coachella, Joining J. Balvin Onstage For ‘Men in Black’ Performance

Will Smith Surprises Fans at Coachella, Joining J. Balvin Onstage For ‘Men in Black’ Performance

Will Smith unexpectedly appeared onstage at Coachella with Latin star J Balvin on Sunday night. The performance was themed around UFOs, and Smith was dressed full on “Men in Black,” channeling his iconic character’s signature sunglasses no less as they performed the title track of the 1997 sci-fi action film.

The Bad Boy actor’s appearance was not long, but Smith, who is no stranger to rocking a moment on stage, made a memorable performance, ending the set which concluded with Balvin dragged off stage by black-suit-clad dancers while Smith pulled out a “Neuralyzer,” which was the famous memory-eraser device from the film. Balvin actually returned for another song, for a version of his hit “In Da Ghetto” with his dancers, costumed in alien garb, with big green and black eyes.

Balvin, who likes big outlandish stages arose on what Variety described as “a platform from beneath the stage, underneath a giant mock-UFO that looked like a cross between the evil spaceship” from the Jordan Peele film “Nope.”

This isn’t Balvin’s first Coachella performance. In 2019, his set memorably jumpstarted the huge presence of Latin music at the festival that year. That year was a big one for the music festival in the desert as it featured performances from at the time rising stars Bad Bunny and Rosalía. At the end of his set, Balvin, who is Colombian, professed how proud he was to see and hear so many artists performing in Spanish at the world’s biggest music festival. Nowadays, it is more so expected, and much of that credit goes to J Balvin and his peers, who continue to electrify Coachella every year.

[LISTEN] Lupe Fiasco Claims That Drake Is A “Better Rapper” Than Kendrick Lamar

Screenshot 2024 04 16 at 10.59.22 AM

During this relentless week of back-and-forth diss records from those who many claim to be the best in the game, certified slang spitter Lupe Fiasco may have just dragged himself into the ongoing rap beef by boldly claiming that Drake is a “better rapper” than Kendrick Lamar.

In an interview with Aye Verb on X Spaces yesterday(April 15), Lupe said that he didn’t hear Kendrick’s “Like That” diss aimed at Future and Metro Boomin, but he said that he heard Drake’s “Push Ups(Drop And Give Me 50). When asked who he sees as the better emcee, The Cool rapper answered without hesitation, Drake.”

“I think Kendrick’s a better technically skilled performer but I don’t think he’s a better rapper,” said Lupe.

He goes on saying, “I think he’s a great performer. I think he’s a great rapper. I think he makes great albums. I think he’s a great conceptualist. I think he’s a great mind. I think what he does for the culture is amazing. I love him to death. I do not think that he’s this amazing lyricist, though.”

He later apologized for his comments, saying, “Maybe I should have just left it alone. Even though my impetus was the ‘Control’ verse … I apologize for even engaging and talking about n-ggas’ careers. I’ll never do that shit again.”

SZA to Receive Hal David Starlight Award at 53rd Annual Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction

SZA Among Nomination Leaders for 2023 MTV Video Music Awards

The Songwriters Hall of Fame has announced that the esteemed Hal David Starlight Award for 2024 will be bestowed upon the talented artist SZA. The ceremony will take place on Thursday, June 13, at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City.

The Hal David Starlight Award, named after SHOF Chairman Emeritus Hal David, recognizes young songwriters who have made significant contributions to the music industry. SZA joins an illustrious list of past recipients, including Post Malone, Halsey, and Taylor Swift.

SHOF Chairman Nile Rodgers said, “This is such an exciting time for songwriters and music. Phenomenal artists like Beyonce and Taylor Swift are pushing the envelope of what success looks like but who could argue that the last 2 years belong to SZA. Incredible songwriting, incredible performances, incredible artistry.  She so deserves to be the 2024 recipient of the Hal David Starlight Award!”

Born in St. Louis and raised in Maplewood, NJ, SZA has made waves in the music industry with her genre-defying sound. Her sophomore album, “SOS,” released in 2022, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and garnered universal acclaim. The album’s success earned SZA multiple Grammy nominations and solidified her as a force to be reckoned with in the music world.

SZA’s remarkable achievements extend beyond her chart-topping albums. She has received numerous awards, including a Best Pop Duo/Group Performance Grammy. Organizations such as Billboard, MTV, and the NAACP have recognized her contributions to music.

The Hal David Starlight Award is a fitting tribute to SZA’s talent and dedication to her craft. As she continues pushing the boundaries of creativity and songwriting, SZA remains a trailblazer in the music industry, inspiring audiences worldwide.

Future, Metro Boomin, and Kendrick Lamar Threepeat on Top of Billboard Hot 100 with “Like That”

Future and Metro Boomin Announces Two New Albums in 'We Don't Trust You' Trailer

Future, Metro Boomin, and Kendrick Lamar have claimed the three-peat on top of the Billboard Hot 100 with “Like That.” The single that kicked off the rap Civil War continues to reign supreme.

According to Billboard, another beef record hit the top 10 as J. Cole’s shots to Kendrick Lamar, “7 Minute Drill,” came in at No. 6. It will likely have a sharp plummet after Cole apologized and pulled the single from streaming.

“Like That” saw 40 million streams (down 13%) and 14 million radio impressions (up 39%) and sold 3,000 copies (down 56%) in the week of April 5-11. It’s the first song to hit 40 million streams in its first three weeks since Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers” in Jan-Feb 2023. Among hip-hop hits, it’s the first since Cardi B’s “WAP” in Aug-Sep 2020 to achieve this. J. Cole’s “7 Minute Drill” debuted at No. 6 on the Hot 100, powered by 23.4 million streams, marking his 13th top 10 entry and first since October 2023.

You can see the full top 10 list below.

[WATCH] Ed Lover Confirms Steve Harvey’s Alleged Betrayal of Bernie Mac

Screen Shot 2024 04 16 at 9.17.40 AM

Few tales in urban legends within the Black community have sparked as much intrigue and speculation as the alleged betrayal of comedy legend Bernie Mac by his fellow Kings of Comedy tour mate, Steve Harvey. Recently, this long-standing rumor was thrust back into the spotlight when comedian Katt Williams dropped truth bombs during an episode of the Club Shay Shay podcast, shedding light on the behind-the-scenes drama surrounding the 2001 box office hit Ocean’s Eleven.

According to Williams, Steve Harvey attempted to undermine Bernie Mac’s role in Ocean’s Eleven, a pivotal moment in the late comedian’s career, by vying for the part after Bernie had already been cast. While this revelation sent shockwaves through the comedy community, it was only the tip of the iceberg.

Enter Ed Lover, a well-known figure in the entertainment industry and a close friend of Bernie Mac. In a recent episode of the Culture Club Uncensored podcast, Ed dropped another bombshell, confirming that he had heard the same story directly from Bernie Mac.

“All I can say is what Bernie told me,” Ed revealed. “He was upset with Steve because he said Steve tried to get him taken off the ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ movie and tried to vie for his part after Bernie was already hired.”

The revelation adds complexity to the ongoing saga, providing further credibility to the longstanding urban legend. Bernie Mac’s alleged frustration and sense of betrayal at the hands of his colleague highlight the cutthroat nature of the entertainment industry, even among friends and peers.

Despite his challenges, Bernie Mac’s impact on comedy and entertainment continues to resonate, leaving a mark on the hearts of millions.

Watch below.

Happy 69th Birthday To Hip Hop Founder DJ Kool Herc!

Kool Herc

On this day in 1955, DJ Kool Herc was born Clive Campbell in Kingston, Jamaica. He moved to the Bronx when he was 12 years old and took on the name “Kool Herc” when he became a member of the graffiti crew, the “Ex-Vandals.” The name is short for ‘Hercules’ because of his 6′ 4″ stature. He began DJing parties that he and his sister Cindy threw in their building, which was on 1520 Sedgewick Avenue(Sedgewick & Cedar) in the South Bronx.

Herc pioneered extending the breakbeat on records by playing the same record on two turntables and cueing the “break” in the record, which he noticed had the most significant effect on the dancers at the parties. This was emulated all over the NYC area during the 1970s, thus spawning the culture of Hip Hop. He coined the terms “B-Boys” and “B-Girls” for the dancers who were “breaking,” which Herc says was street slang for “acting energetically” or “causing a disturbance.”

Kool Herc has influenced other founding pioneers of Hip Hop culture, including Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmaster Flash, and the Sugarhill Gang.

The Source would like to give Kool Herc his proper salute because, without him and his contributions, none of us would have the opportunity to experience this global phenomenon known as Hip Hop!
