Pyer Moss’ Kerby Jean-Raymond Slams ‘Business of Fashion’s’ Inclusivity, Mag Responds

Fashion’s go to trade magazine is under fire and for all the right reasons. One of the game’s hottest designers has them under pressure.

Hypebeast is reporting that Business of Fashion, the world’s leading trade publication on fashion, has admitted they have some work to do. Earlier this week the editorial staff announced their annual #BoF500, a list that names the top 500 most influential people. The lineup included Kerby Jean-Raymond, founder of menswear label Pyer Moss. He has since declined the recognition due to their insensitivity at their accompanying BoF‘s 500 in Paris and then some.

Raymond wrote a lengthy letter on Medium accusing the staff and industry as a whole of cultural appropriation. “Homage without empathy and representation is appropriation” he declared. “Instead, explore your own culture, religion and origins. By replicating ours and excluding us — you prove to us that you see us as a trend. Like, we gonna die black, are you.”

Naturally the intensive piece circulated quickly forcing Business Of Fashion editor-in-chief Imran Amed to respond.

Amed made it clear that Raymond is not alone. “Kerby has every right to voice his concerns and we respect his perspective. He is also right about several things. As Kerby points out, the fashion industry has often treated inclusivity as a trend, putting diverse faces in our ad campaigns, on our runways, on our magazine covers and, yes, at our parties because it’s cool and of the moment. But I can assure you that this topic is not a trend for BoF” he wrote.

Over the last year, several high-profile brands have been guilty of incorporating culturally insensitive imagery. This specifically caused Gucci to create more opportunities for people of color after their infamous sweater that resembled blackface imagery. You can read Amed’s formal response in full here.

It seems Reebok got the hint about the power of our culture. They just appointed one of the hottest names in fashion to an executive position.

As spotted on High Snobiety the sportswear giant announced that Kerby Jean-Raymond will be their Artistic Director for Reebok Studies__ division. Known for his work at his own fashion label Pyer Moss; the designer will oversee the department which aims to advance the brand’s imprint within the creative community.

Reportedly, Kerby’s first order of business is to engage Reebok’s current roster of talent. Additionally, he has already hired a Managing Director, who has yet to be formally named, that will report to him.

Founded in 2013, Pyer Moss made waves in the fashion industry during their spring 2016 menswear collection during New York Fashion Week. Themed around the Black Lives Matter, the show included multiple references to the movement via the featured clothing, video and street art.

Earlier this year Pyer Moss paid tribute to Black queen history with the suit made for director Lena Waithe where the pinstripes were composed of lyrics from iconic songs synonymous to drag culture (“I’m Coming Out”).

Hypebeast Alert: An Unreleased Kanye West Sneaker Now Selling For $5K

Before Kanye West partnered with adidas, he was forming his own apparel brand called Pastelle. While it never formally launched, the defunct line is still very much in demand.

As spotted on Page Six a long lost prototype crafted by the “We Major” rapper that never saw the light of day has resurfaced. A shoe under his former Pastelle brand is now on the resale market making it one of the rarest feet pieces ever. Fashion model Gio Mitchell apparently made a good impression on ‘Ye back in 2009. The story goes that West gifted him a sample size 9 while at a photo shoot. The shoe features a canvas upper, velcro fastening while “The Past Tells Everything” branding lives on the bottom of the soles.

Upon inspection, the low-tops bear a strong relationship to the Nike Vandals which Kanye wore occasionally during the Late Registration era. While Mitchell claims they have never been worn the pair isn’t in mint condition. The listing states they “have some discoloration due to aging”.

Nevertheless, the fact this release never made it to shelves makes it a hot commodity in the sneaker community.

Originally founded sometime in 2008-2009, the Pastelle brand was intended to represent the embodiment of West’s vast tastes, interests and philosophies. To properly bring the idea to life he enlisted some of the most talented designers from different product categories including clothing, jewelry, accessories and eyewear. Even though he was seen wearing some, at the time, pretty cool looking samples the line just quietly died a slow death. Almost ten years later Complex did an interesting report detailing who was involved and how great it could have been for the culture.

Currently, these 1 of 1’s are going for a cool $5,000 dollars. You can purchase them here.

NBA Star Kevin Love Designs Collection For Banana Republic [Photos]

Kevin Love will soon be balling in the fashion world. He has worked on a new capsule with Banana Republic.

According to Page Six the Cleveland Cavalier has partnered with the national retail chain for a new men’s collection. Titled BR/K.LOVE-18, the collaboration is inspired and designed by the pro basketball player.

Staying true to the fashion brand’s approach to chic work wear, all the pieces represent his take on classic garments including the leather biker jacket and cable knit sweater. “I look for pieces that are stylish and functional, which was an important aspect when designing this collection,” Love explained to Page Six.

This isn’t your typical celebrity drop. It is apparent Love and the BR team took their time curating BR/K.LOVE-18 as it is 86 pieces deep. Products range from a plush double-breasted topcoat, varsity jacket, long sleeve polo shirts, neck wear and other accessories. The power forward also made sure to include big and tall options to cater to consumers who also struggle to find clothing that fits their long limbs.
