Today in Hip-Hop History: Erykah Badu Dropped Her Debut LP ‘Baduizm’ 24 Years Ago

tumblr p3z0e3mroc1t1yehoo1 500

On this date in 1997, the debut album from neo-soul queen Erykah Badu entitled Baduizm was released on Universal Records through the Kedar imprint. This LP catapulted the Texan songstress into the Grammy Award-winning music icon that she has become two decades later.

Produced primarily by Madukwu Chinwah, Bob Powers, who is known from ATCQ’s Low End Theory album, as well as various live tracks from the famed Hip Hop band The Roots, this project brought the smoky jazz lounge sound to Hip Hop circles via the language of the 5% Nation. Badu’s naturalista fashion and overall aura not only made lanes for artists like India Irie, Jill Scott, and even Janelle Monae but brought that positive energy that she called “izm” into the living rooms around the globe.

Storytelling tracks such as “Next Lifetime” and “Otherside Of The Game” showed what would be her cult-like following her feminine vulnerabilities, which made her even more audibly attractive to her listeners. The timeless “On & On” will forever be recognized as the hit that made the three times platinum album the cherished musical gem that it still stands as 20 years later.

Thanks to Ms. Badu, Kedar Massenburg, The Roots and everyone else involved in this very intricate piece of Hip Hop history!

Erykah Badu Describes Andre 3000 as ‘One of Her Best Friends on the Planet’

Erykah Badu Describes Andre 3000 as One of Her Best Friends on the Planet

Erykah Badu sat down with Summer Walker for Rolling Stones’ Musicians on Musicians segment, and she opened up more about her relationship with Andre 3000.

She explained that they developed a friendship over the years as they co-parented, which they didn’t do when they got into a romantic relationship.

“When we became boyfriend and girlfriend in the ‘90s, we didn’t become friends first. We were attracted to each other first,” she said. “We had stuff in common, but we didn’t learn all of that until over the years. We have a 23-year-old son. Over these years, we’ve just become closer and closer as friends, as humans, as man, as woman.”

Even though they’re no longer romantically involved, Erykah reveals that they’re still very close. “He just left Dallas, actually. He came down for my grandma’s memorial. He’s one of my best friends on the planet,” she shared. “I care for him so very much, about his livelihood, his art, his feelings. And I’m a super big fan of him. I’m assuming he’s also a fan of my music. We’re really close.”

Erykah Badu says their relationship can transform to be whatever she needs it to be. “We laugh all the time, talk about things. It’s brother and sister, it’s grandmother and grandson, it’s father and daughter. It’s so many different things depending on what the situation calls for,” she said.

The Over It singer called their relationship “beautiful.”

Erykah Badu + Jill Scott Confirmed For Epic Verzuz Face-Off: “It’s Time For The Queens”

Erykah Badu Jill Scott

R&B superstars Erykah Badu and Jill Scott are going to put their classics to the test. The award-winning crooners are slated to face-off against each other next weekend.

Erykah V. Jill

Heading into the weekend, producers Swizz Beatz and Timbaland broke the major news to fans. They both went to their social media pages to reveal Badu and Scott would match up on Saturday, May 9.

“It’s time for the Queens on Verzuz 🙌🏽 @fatbellybella vs @missjillscott shoutout @FemmeItForward let’s go @THEREALSWIZZZ @verzuztv” -Timbaland’s Twitter

Recently, Erykah reacted to buzz about possibly facing off against iconic singer Lauryn Hill. Despite the match-up looking spot-on, Badu said Lauryn would come up with the W.

Wait, There’s More

Badu has been looking into the future. The veteran crooner has shared her interest and intent to move forward with pursuing paid online concerts for musicians to connect with fans. In April 2020, she dished on her recent successful string of quarantine performances she put on. In addition to putting respect on her own name, Badu also acknowledged how her creation could encourage peers to come up with their own paid, online concerts.

“Here we are, proof of concept,” she said. “It can be done and it can be done by an artist, who can erase the invisible lines between myself and fans, or in this case, the user. Instead of going through streaming services, who handle the payments from customers and pay me, the artist, 30 cents or 10 cents, I could directly do business with the people I am serving. It’s a magnificent feeling. … I learned that I don’t mind taking the weight or the loss, because if it encourages other artists to use this new platform to sustain themselves and their ecostystem, then it’s worth it. My mom said, ‘If you don’t know what you’re doing, it’s because it has not been done.” (Forbes)

Before You Go

In early April 2020, Badu put on a must-see performance. She recently shared a highlight clip from her “Apocalypse 2: The Experimental Room” concert.

“4/5 APOCALYPSE 2 : THE EXPERIMENTAL ROOM / window seat : Featuring Badu and her electronic band THE CANNABINOIDS (( @robfree @picnictyme @dja1 @djbigtexas ))ON HER OWN PLATFORM BADUWORLDMARKET. . . Erykah Badu Responds to Critics About Her $2 Quarantine Concert: ‘Did You Ask iTunes When You Bought Your Music?’

Erykah Badu kicked off her Quarantine Concert Series: Apocalypse One and serenaded her fans alongside a live band all for $1. The show is returning Sunday, Apocalypse Two: The Rooms, and this time it costs $2 and she had something to say to everyone who questioned the fee.

“I’d say to them, ‘Did you ask iTunes when you bought music?’ No, you didn’t. You bought the music, and you enjoyed it, but I’m not just giving you a track. I’m giving you a show with the integrity of my live show… And, I would say, ‘Thank you very much, because.’ There’s also a donate button, so if you have more than a dollar, then we’ll take that too because it feeds a community of artists.”

The singer says she’s living out her dream of performing in her bed. “I’m the laziest artist in the world. My dream was always to perform from my bed and guess what? It came through!” Badu told Page Six.

The “Window Seat” singer also explained to the outlet what inspired her to launch the virtual concert series. “I perform eight months out of the year. It’s my main source of income and there’s a whole universe of people that is supported from the tour. This is the only thing that truly supports the lifestyle,” she said.

Erykah Badu and her band have been taking the recommended safety precautions like wearing masks and washing their hands. “All of our hands are three shades lighter than our arms,” she joked.

The concert can be streamed exclusively on baduworldmarket.com. She assures that this is the first of many “large dream series.”

“The experience has really been that we can, as artists, musicians use our own platforms to make our own money and not owe a middle man. It erases that imaginary line between us and our audience… I just created a new way, a new revenue, not just for myself but for anyone who watches — every artist who watches,” she concluded.
