Live Nation Must Face the Music in Drakeo the Ruler Lawsuit

drakeo

A Los Angeles court has ruled that the family of deceased hip hop artist Drakeo The Ruler may proceed with its wrongful death lawsuit against concert promotion giant Live Nation. The ruling comes as a blow to Live Nation, who had sought to have the case dismissed in its early stages.

Darrell Wayne Caldwell, also known as Drakeo The Ruler, was murdered at the Live Nation-promoted Once Upon A Time in L.A. Festival in December 2021, when a mob of many dozens of assailants stormed the event’s VIP area in an apparent planned attack on Drakeo and his crew, stabbing him to death.

A wrongful death lawsuit is a civil claim brought to impose liability on a defendant for negligently causing the death of the plaintiff’s relative. The case was filed by Drakeo’s brother in February 2021, accusing Live Nation of negligence by failing to have proper security measures in place for the concert, especially given the show’s proximity to South Central Los Angeles, a center of heavy gang activity. There may also be criminal claims brought in this matter, although as of now, no charges have been filed, and no suspects have been named in the attack.

Live Nation sought immediately to dismiss the case, arguing that it could not have foreseen the attack and, therefore, as a matter of law, could not be held responsible for failing to provide sufficient security. Live Nation argued that the plaintiffs were required to point to a previous attack that would have made this event foreseeable.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Yolanda Orozco rejected this argument, writing that “[t]he fact that defendants knew security would be needed for the event supports the finding that the performing artists’ safety was a concern for defendants and foreseeable to defendants.”  Judge Orozco further held that even if a mob attack occurred for the first time, it might still be foreseeable to Live Nation.

This ruling does not resolve the case in favor of Drakeo’s family. Instead, it means that the lawsuit will not be dismissed at the preliminary stage, and the parties will now be able to make discoveries and collect evidence supporting their respective positions. It also increases the chances that the case will eventually settle, as most patients do.

This is not the first time Live Nation has faced negligence claims in running its concerts. The company faces numerous lawsuits from the family and victims of the November 2021 Astroworld disaster, where a deadly surging crowd during a Travis Scott performance causes the deaths of ten people and injuries to hundreds of others.

In his typical non-apologetic fashion, social activist and controversial online personality Charleston White took to social media to disrespect every street organization/gang known in the U.S.. The 52-year-old then went as far as cursing the names of fallen rappers who were associated with the aforementioned street gangs such as Nipsey Hussle, Drakeo The Ruler and King Von.

White, who is a former Crip from Texas, disassociated himself from the California-based gang when the family of the person he killed at age 14 forgave him for taking the life of their relative. In the above video, White holds up an assault rifle magazine while he declares, “Death to all Crips and Bloods. Death to all GDs and BDs. May they all die like King Von. May they al die like Drakeo The Ruler, May they all die like Nipsey Hussle.”

Drakeo The Ruler’s Mom Shares Details From A Witness Surrounding Fatal Stabbing

Drakeo the Ruler Killed by Stabbing During Festival Appearance

Drakeo The Ruler’s mother reveals details surrounding her son’s fatal stabbing.

During an interview with Rolling Stone, Darrylene Corniel shared that she plans to take legal action after her son Drakeo was fatally stabbed in the neck while at the Once Upon a Time in LA music festival.

Drakeo’s mom reveals new information was given to her by an alleged witness she’d spoken to. Corniel stated that there were about 40 to 60 people in the vicinity, and a large number of people reportedly arrived backstage around the same time as YG.

According to reports, the fatal stabbing of Drakeo the Ruler came amid an ongoing feud with fellow Los Angeles artist YG, and allegedly Drakeo threatened to kill him just months before this incident.

However, the investigating police nor anyone else has come forward to suggest YG was involved in the incident that led to Drakeo, 28, being fatally stabbed.

Corniel stated that her son was backstage with a small group of people, that included his younger brother, Devonte Caldwell, also known by Ralfy the Plug.

“Everything just happened so quickly,” Corniel told Rolling Stone. “They started trying to jump them.”

Drakeo’s mother shared that her younger son, Ralfy the Plug attempted to protect Drakeo to no avail.

“He was trying to fight, but when he turned around, he could see his brother with blood gushing out of him,” she explained. “He was like, ‘Did they stab you?’ It was like, there were so many of them.”

She added that because his death was reportedly ruled a homicide, she was not able to touch his deceased body.

“He was hit in his neck, I saw him when I went to the hospital.” “They said it’s a homicide, so I wasn’t able to hug him or kiss him or anything like that.” Corniel detailed, “I had to look at him through a window.”

Drakeo The Ruler’s mom made clear that she will not rest until she receives justice for her son, adding that she also plans to sue as she feels the venue’s security failed to do their job properly.

“We plan to sue,” she shared. “This happened backstage at an event. Someone has to be held accountable.”

The California Highway Patrol, which is leading the investigation, told reporters Sunday night “there’s nothing credible” to suggest any of the other performers at the Once Upon a Time in LA music festival were involved.

Drakeo The Ruler’s Mother Plans To File Lawsuit Over Son’s Death, Says Someone Needs To Be Held Responsible

drakeo

Los Angeles MC Drakeo The Ruler, whose real name is Darrell Caldwell, was fatally stabbed backstage at the Once Upon A Time In LA festival on Saturday night. Following the attack, the festival was shut down, and Drakeo would succumb to his wounds hours later. Now, Caldwell’s mother, Darrylene Corniel, plans to file a lawsuit, claiming that someone needs to be responsible for her son’s death.

Corniel announced her intention to file a lawsuit in an interview with Rolling Stone. “We plan to sue,” Corniel said. “This happened backstage at an event. Someone has to be held accountable.” Corniel stated that she blames the loss of her son on the security backstage and their inability to control the situation that led to her son’s death.

“He was hit in his neck. I saw him when I went to the hospital,” she recalled. “They said it’s a homicide, so I wasn’t able to hug him or kiss him or anything like that. I had to look at him through a window.” She continued, “I need this to be out there. I need people to know. And I do want justice for my son. And I do believe that justice will be served.”

Corniel apparently spoke to witnesses about what transpired. She says that according to witnesses, Drakeo and his brother Ralfy the Plug were accompanied by a small group while backstage, and a larger group of about 40-60 people surrounded them when YG went on stage. “Everything just happened so quickly,” she said. “They started trying to jump them.”

She went on to say that she does not understand why so many people were allowed to be backstage and why there was not an adequate number of security and security measures.

“They let all these people in, and you’re not supposed to have all these people backstage. And your security is supposed to be in place,” she said. “The whole program should have been orchestrated a lot better than what it was. And there should have been more protection. Even if you have metal detectors, even if you pat them down, you let those people come in there. You had more people come in than you were supposed to. And you allowed them to jump my son. You didn’t protect my son.”

“Darrell, my son, had a good heart,” Corniel said. He took care of those around him because I taught him that, to watch out for everybody. People who really know my son knew he was a real individual. He had a genuine heart.”

Following the untimely death of Drakeo The Ruler, who was fatally stabbed in the neck while backstage at the Once Upon A Time In L.A. Festival this past weekend, Dipset capo Jim Jones gave his condolences to the fallen rapper, but was met online with fierce criticism.

Jones, who was just in the news last week for an alleged fight with Freddie Gibbs and his crew in Miami’s Prime 112, was called hypocritical for telling rappers to be tactical and protective and told he was “part of the problem” by critics because of the Miami incident.

Jones has been at the forefront of recognizing the dangers of being a notable in the Hip Hop community and over 20 rappers have been killed since the Dipset lieutenant took his stance. Critics of the Harlem rapper still say his post was hypocritical following the Gibbs’ crew beat down.
