Dionne Warwick Mourns Burt Bacharach: ‘Burt’s Transition Is Like Losing a Family Member’

Dionne Warwick Mourns Burt Bacharach: ‘Burt’s Transition Is Like Losing a Family Member'

Burt Bacharach, the scribe behind classic songs like “Raindrops Keel Fallin’ on my Head,” has died at age 94.

The “easy listening” musician worked alongside Dionne Warwick, Tom Jones, Neil Diamond, and more. In 1986, Bacharach worked alongside Warwick, Elton John, Gladys Knight, and Stevie Wonder for “That’s What Friends Are For,” which raised millions for AIDS research.

In a statement to The Source, Warwick compared Bacharach’s death to “losing a family member.”

“Burt’s transition is like losing a family member. These words I’ve been asked to write are being written with sadness over the loss of my Dear Friend and my Musical Partner. On the lighter side we laughed a lot and had our run ins, but always found a way to let each other know our family, like roots, were the most important part of our relationship. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family, letting them know he is now peacefully resting and I too will miss him.”

– Dionne Warwick

In his career, Bacharach had 52 top 40 hits, won an Oscar for Best Song for “Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do),” and won eight GRAMMYs. You can learn more about the late Burt Bacharach here.

Dionne Warwick Made Surprise Appearance During Gladys Knight, Patti LaBelle Verzuz Celebration

Dionne Warwick Made Surprise Appearance During Gladys Knight Patti LaBelle Verzuz Celebration

Gladys Knight and Patti LaBelle were the latest legends to go head-to-head on the popular Instagram live Verzuz TV series.

During the three-hour showdown, the vocal powerhouses ran through their chart-topping, timeless hits, and shared behind-the-scenes stories about a few records. But the most enjoyable part of the live stream were the women singing along to the songs because they’re from an era when singers used to actually sing without autotune, and it’s almost impossible not to sing your own song.

They reminisced, shared laughs, harmonized with each other (and their younger selves), and encouraged hundreds of thousands of viewers to vote.

One highlight of the night was when Dionne Warwick joined the live stream and sung “That’s What Friends Are For” before joining Knight and LaBelle to sing “Superwoman.”

Gladys Knight and Patti LaBelle was an epic follow-up to Monica and Brandy’s historic face-off.

Verzuz TV has grown exponentially since Timbaland and Swizz Beatz launched the series in March. We’ve come a long way from faulty connections and drunk shouting from respective screens.

Who do you think should appear on the next Verzuz?

Dionne Warwick Shades Beyoncé Like Only A R&B Legend Could

Dionne Warwick is on a roll.

First she lamblasted her family for the ideas around Whitney Houston, her deceased and iconic cousin, becoming a hologram for future tours, and now she is coming for Queen Beyoncé. Beyoncé is arguably the most commercially successful vocalist- male or female. But commercial success does not seem to be enough to secure ICON status.

“It’s not given to you, you earn it.” Warwick tells CBS’s Entertainment Tonight.

“It is wonderful to see how she’s been able to create what and who she wants to be and who she is.” she informs Essence, the premier Black women’s cultural mag. “I am very proud of that. But sustaining and becoming the Icon… I doubt, I really do.”

She further told ET that it took her decades to arrive at that status and that one must pay your dues.

With a career that dates back to the early 60s and a musical pedigree that boasts strong roots in laying down the foundation for popular music, she herself being one of the first Black women to really cross over to the pop charts, Warwick may know a little something about paying dues.

But is she correct?

Has not Beyoncé had at almost 30 years to establish her icon status? In 1992, when she performed on Star Search prompting a signing with Elektra records and then later to Columbia, did she not endure the highs and lows, and grunt work that all artists go through to achieve star status.

Let’s look at all her accomplishments that might make her iconic status.

1. Beyoncé was the first Black women to be the headliner at the popular Coachella festival.

2. She is the most Grammy-nominated women in history.

3. She has had six records debut at number 1 on the Billboard charts and is the only artist ever to do so.

4. She is not only the highest paid Black musical artists ever… you hear me? ever… but also the world’s highest paid musician.

5. She is has sold over over 178.5 million records in her career, making her one of the most bankable singers ever to touch the mic.

This leads us to ask, what else does she need to do to be an icon?
