Danny Brown Says Dave Chappelle’s Skit on ‘Detroit 2’ Was Not Completely Accurate

danny brown viceland dannys house season trailer

It seems as if Danny Brown has a different view of the story Dave Chappelle told on Big Sean’s Detroit 2 album.

In an interview with HotNewHipHop, the Detroit MC said the story Chappelle told about him getting high with him before his set in Detroit was not entirely true.

“It was funny, but I ain’t like that shit, man,” Brown said in the interview. “Because that ain’t the true story [laughs]. I’ll tell my side in my stand-up set.”

Those who listened to Detroit 2 might recall the story Chappelle told on the skit “Story By Dave Chappelle.” Chappelle said that before he went on stage, Danny Brown came backstage and the two smoked together. The weed was so strong however that Dave bombed when it came time for him to get on stage and perform. While he was on stage, he apparently saw Danny Brown sneak out of the back, which made the comedian laugh.

After Chappelle’s set was over, he encountered an older gentleman backstage who gave him a pep talk. That man turned out to be Big Sean’s father.

Big Sean Says Kendrick Lamar Reached Out to Him Following ‘Deep Reverence’ Release

Big Sean Says Kendrick Lamar Reached Out to Him Following 'Deep Reverence' Release

Big Sean has had a big week following the release of Detroit 2. In a recent interview with Sway In The Morning, he touched on his relationship with Nipsey Hussle and how Kendrick Lamar reached out to him after the release of “Deep Reverence.”

Sean revealed that he and Nipsey had multiple songs in the works. After Nip’s death, Sean said that something shifted within him. “It shifted in, I feel like, all of us,” he said. “Because you could tell [Nipsey] was on an upswing of being a greater version of himself. He was tuning in to his highest self. It hurt real bad.”

The Detroit MC harkened back to a conversation he had with Punch, President of TDE, before Nipsey’s death. The two talked about their longtime respect for Nip. Punch even told Sean that he should reach out to Kendrick Lamar. Sean took Punch’s advice and reached out to Lamar only to find out he had the wrong number. And Sean left it at that.

After dropping “Deep Reverence,” Kendrick reached out to Sean to show his appreciation and give his praise. “So, when we were able to talk, it was a good reconciliation and it was a good mutual respect. And even when he heard ‘Deep Reverence,’ he hit me and was like ‘Yo, I appreciate you showing me that love. I appreciate that love for me in the verse. You and Nip went crazy.’”

Sean was glad to hear from Kendrick after years of supposed beefing and throwing subs at each other. Sean said that people in his crew were telling him something about Kendrick, and Kendrick’s crew was doing the same about Sean. “The situation was, he thought that people around him were telling him something, people around me were telling me something, and it just really wasn’t the case.” Sean also added that the internet was really blowing the situation out of proportion.

“It was good to get that response from your brother,” Sean said. “On that record, I just was keeping it open and honest and real. I wasn’t trying to hold back. It was not out of disrespect, either. It was out of respect for myself and the things I’ve learned along the way.”

Dave Chappelle Recalls Big Sean’s Father’s “pep talk” after Getting Booed in Detroit

Dave Chappelle to Host Block Party for Dayton Shooting Victims

Big Sean dropped his new LP ‘Detroit 2’ on Friday with several stories from Erykah Badu, Stevie Wonder and Dave Chappelle about the rapper’s hometown. Chappelle specifically recalls speaking with Big Sean’s father after his infamous stand up show in Detroit where he bombed miserably.

Chappelle has previously told the story of getting high with Detroit rapper Danny Brown prior to going on stage at The Filmore in the D, and he retold the story on Sean’s album. Chappelle remembers getting so high with Danny Brown that he knew before he even went on stage that he was going to bomb.

After leaving the stage, a gang of people behind the scenes checked to make sure Dave was okay after the bad performance, to which he responds that he really didn’t care. Chappelle compares the room to the famous SNL skit Massive Head wound Harry.

What stuck with the famous comedian from that night was a conversation he had with a man who turned out to be Big Sean’s father who Chappelle says gave him a “pep talk that only a dad could give” that made the comedian feel “wonderful.”

Chappelle doesn’t give the details of the conversation, but proceeds to give love to Big Sean and to the city of Detroit.

Big Sean Drops Star-Studded ‘Detroit 2’ Track List Featuring Travis Scott, Post Malone, Stevie Wonder & More

Kanye West Named as One of Three Executive Producers of Big Sean's 'Detroit 2'

We are only a few days away from the arrival of Big Sean’s 5th studio album, Detroit 2. The “Bounce Back” rapper has teased the project over the past several weeks with new singles, videos, merch and more. He even hoped on Instagram Live on Tuesday night and pondered on previewing songs before its official drop. We’ll see if we get that sneak peek. Until then we’ll enjoy what we have until Friday, Sept 4.

So far Sean Don has dropped “Harder Than My Demons” and the candid, Nipsey Hussle assisted, “Deep Reverence.” On Wednesday afternoon, Sean took to his socials to drop the star-studded tracklist for Detroit 2. The I Decided follow-up features Diddy, Lil Wayne, Ty Dolla $ign, Jhene Aiko and more. Fans can also look forward to the 10 rapper posse cut entitled, “Friday Night Cypher.” Sean exclusively taps D-town natives including Eminem, 42 Dugg, Kash Doll, Sada Baby and more.

It would be remiss of Sean not to continue the interlude monologues from the 2012 prequel, where legends recall their fondest memories of Motor City. This time Big Sean calls on Dave Chapelle, Erykah Badu and Motown legend Stevie Wonder for their stories.

Last week Big Sean revealed that his label was hesitant on the release of “Deep Reverence,” featuring the late Nipsey Hussle. Despite the lack of support, he trusted his gut. The track was well received by fans for its sincere nature. It certainly set the tone for the upcoming album. Detroit 2 is executive produced by Hit-Boy, Sean himself and Kanye West.

The “Bounce Back” rapper has been signed to GOOD Music/Def Jam throughout his entire career. Despite the lack of label support, e went on to thank his supporters for the love shown to “Deep Reverence.”

Big Sean Says Nipsey Hussle’s Death Led to Squashing Feud with Kendrick Lamar

Big Sean Says Nipsey Hussle's Death Led to Squashing Feud with Kendrick Lamar

Big Sean’s “Deep Reverence” single was jammed pack with a lot. The early release brought fans a long-awaited verse from Nipsey Hussle and shared details on a miscarriage with Jhene Aiko but also highlighted the simmering beef between him and Kendrick Lamar.

The two rappers had a timid relationship, which sparked way back during the “Control” days and lasted across time with little shots sent back and forth, but the death of Hussle let Sean know it was time to bury the friction.

“After what happened to Nipsey, I reached out to Kendrick
It wasn’t even no real issues there to begin with
Lack of communication and wrong information
From people fueled by their ego, it’s like mixin’ flames with diesel”

Big Sean on “Deep Reverence”

Previously, Big Sean spoke on his beef with Kendrick Lamar when talking to Joe Budden during a Pull Up, Genius points out. “Me and Kendrick got a history of songs… When this whole Big Sean, Kendrick beef was going on, it was something I wish I would have spoken up about because there was nothing,” he said at the time.

You can hear the entire “Deep Reverence” below.
