Idris Elba Reportedly the Front Runner to Replace Will Smith in ‘Suicide Squad’ Sequel

It has been reported that Will Smith will not be returning to resume his role as “Deadshot” in the DC comic book thriller Suicide Squad sequel. Upon hearing of the news, many wondered who would replace Smith in the lead role. It looks like Idris Elba is the leading contender.

THR reports that Smith made the decision not the star in the upcoming sequel due to scheduling conflicts. He is currently preparing for the upcoming release of Disney’s Aladdin. Elba is now the favorite to be the next to play “Deadshot.” Reportedly the star of Luther made a huge impression on Warner Bros. and director James Gunn during a recent get-together. Reportedly, Elba is the first and only choice for Gunn and the studio as the replacement for Smith.

The brass at Warner Bros. is said to be heavily invested in the Suicide Squad sequel and its script that was penned by Gunn. The film project is going forward with high expectations due to the tremendous success of the first installment of the Suicide Squad.

Also, Gunn is said to be using mostly DC characters who did not previously appear in David Ayer’s 2016 film, although several are expected to return, including Deadshot, Harley Quinn, and Rick Flagg, originally played by Joel Kinnaman, say sources. Another source, however, says Flagg is no longer in the follow-up.

Elba continues to be on a hot streak. He is set to host NBC’s Saturday Night Live this weekend for the first time. He plays a villain in Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, which is slated to bow Aug. 2, and is coming off of filming Working Title and Universal’s adaptation of the Broadway mainstay Cats, in which he plays the feline Macavity. If that wasn’t enough, Elba is a popular DJ having spun at the Royal Wedding for Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan and will perform at Coachella this year.

The Suicide Squad has an Aug. 6, 2021, release date.

Ruby Rose Looks Amazing In Her Batwoman Costume

The CW has given us our first look at Ruby Rose as Kate Kane, AKA Batwoman and she looks amazing.

The promo image sees Rose in her full Batwoman outfit, designed by Academy Award-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood ( Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Tomb Raider, Arrow, The Flash)

Batwoman will be introduced in The CW’s Arrowverse crossover between The Flash, Arrow, and Supergirl, which begins filming Tuesday, October 9 in Vancouver. The crossover will kick off with a special episode of The Flash on December 9, 8:00 pm ET. The CW has also announced that Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) will appear in all three episodes, alongside Lois Lane.

One of the most prominent LGBT characters in comics, the Kate Kane Batwoman character first appeared in the 21st century as part of DC Comics’ 52 series. The character then went on to acclaimed runs in Detective Comics and her own self-titled series which was published by DC. Comics.

A spinoff Batwoman series is also in development, which Rose will headline next year if it’s picked up.

‘Titans’ Producers Reveal It Was A Long & Hard Road To Get The Series Greenlit

Robin - Titans

Source: DC / DC

Earlier this year DC fans were treated to the first teaser trailer for DC’s latest live-action superhero series Titans. Surprising fans with its graphic visuals and adult language, the series seemed it would’ve been an easy call to make pre-production, but apparently that wasn’t necessarily the case.

Appearing at Comic Con in New York City, the series producers Producers Geoff Johns and Akiva Goldsman admitted that the process of bringing a dark and edgier version of Titans to the small screen was a grueling seven year process that included lots of convincing and string pulling to get their most famous hero on board, Robin.

“You couldn’t do Titans without Robin,” Johns said during a panel after the first two episodes screened to strong response at Hammerstein Ballroom. “So there was a lot of behind-the-scenes work that went into that.”

What stood out about this rendition of Robin was his ear catching quote in the first trailer, “F*ck Batman.” Actor Brenton Thwaites (Robin) felt it perfectly set up what this show was all about. “I thought it was perfect. … This is not a show about Batman. It’s a show about Dick.” Dick sounds about right.

And it seems like DC made the right call to let Batman’s sidekick be a part of the new live-action series as Titans has already been blessed with a second season before the first one has even premiered. That coupled with the darker and more adult atmosphere of the show seems to be gelling properly as far as fans and producers are concerned.

“We wanted to do something different from everything else out there,” said Johns, who stepped down in July as DC’s Chief Creative Officer and began a producing deal with Warner Bros. Goldsman agreed, “We wanted to arrive at a tone that wasn’t as welcoming as some of the DC shows have been, nor as nihilistic as some of the films have been.”

Titans debuts this October 12 on the DC Universe streaming service in the US and on Netflix internationally.

Joaquin Phoenix As The Joker Revealed

Joaquin Phoenix

Source: photo: WENN

Joaquin Phoenix really is playing the Joker in an origin story and a first look at the actor as the iconic villain has been revealed. The film’s director, Todd Philipps, took to Instagram to reveal a pic of Batman’s first foe.

Don’t expect the evil grin and ghastly skin tone, though.

The pic is sunken-faced (no shots) looking Phoenix with the caption “Arthur.” We assume that’s the character’s real name in the flick before he becomes the Clown Prince of Crime.

The movie still doesn’t have a proper title, but it’s nevertheless due out October 4, 2019 via Warner Bros.

Color us intrigued. But you can’t have Joker without Batman, right? More footage of Phoenix in character on the flip.
