NYC Lifts Curfew a Day Ahead of Schedule

New Yorkers Face $500 Fine for Ignoring Social Distancing Order

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio lifted the citywide curfew on Sunday morning. This was a day earlier than previously planned, The NY Post reports.

“Yesterday and last night we saw the very best of our city. Tomorrow we take the first big step to restart,” he during the briefing. “I made the decision to end the curfew, and honestly, I hope its the last time we ever need a curfew.”

There had been 5 days without property damage and only 4 arrests the previous day. Beginning today, June 8, de Blasio plans on starting Phase 1 of the four-part plan to end the coronavirus lockdown.

The curfew had been enacted last Monday after some protestors used the demonstrations to cause property damage and loot stores across the city. NYC was set to go into a final lockdown at 8 p.m. Sunday, and end at 5 a.m. Monday.

Trump Suggests Protesters Be Imprisoned for 10 Years

In what is now the most talked-about conversation in the political history of this country, President Donald Trump told the governors that they were “weak” for not being willing to send the National Guard into the streets to neutralize the violence and looting that has predicated most of the protests around the country for the death of George Floyd in the hands of the Minneapolis Police. Trump added that the protesters should be put in jail for a long time to avoid these types of riots and insurrections from happening again.

On a teleconference call yesterday (June 1) with several governors from around the United States, President Trump issued a scathing warning that if the leaders do not “dominate” the protesters in the streets by matching force with force, then “they’re going to run over you. You’re going to look like a bunch of jerks.”

“You’ve got to arrest these people. You’ve got arrest these people — and you’ve got to charge them,” Trump said. “And you can’t do this deal where they get one week in jail. These are terrorists, these are terrorists, they’re looking to do bad things to our country. They’re Antifa and they’re radical left. You have to track people, you have to put them in jail for 10 years and you’ll never see this stuff again.”

He added that if the rioting and looting could not be stopped by state and local law enforcement, he will have no problem sending in the U.S. military to all major cities that were not under control, including the country’s capital.

Cities such as New York, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Richmond, and many others have been issued a mandatory curfew during night hours. Those who violate these orders are subject to arrest. Video footage of these overtly aggressive arrests has surfaced, such as the Spelman and Morehouse students who were tased after their car window was broken and tire flattened by the Atlanta Police before being arrested for violating curfew.

Virginia Cities Threaten Teens With Jail Time For Not Making Halloween Curfew

A handful of U.S. cities is cracking down on candy-seekers over the age of 12, banning older children from partaking in the popular Halloween tradition. Police claim they won’t actively seek out violators, but some are convinced that this is just another ploy to arrest inner city teens.

Chesapeake is among nine Virginia cities that have set age limits to keep teenagers out of trouble on Halloween night, local station FOX 23 reported.

In Norfolk, teenagers could face a Class 4 misdemeanor if caught trick-or-treating.

“If any person over the age of 12 years should engage in the activity commonly known as ‘trick or treat’ or any activity of similar character or nature under any name whatsoever, he or she shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and shall be punished by a fine of nott less than $25.00, nor more than $100.00 or by confinement in jail for not more than six months or both,” the Chesapeake ordinance reads.

According to the city’s website, teens escorting their younger siblings from house to house shouldn’t have to worry, however, authorities warned that some Halloween high jinks simply wouldn’t be tolerated.

“For example, a thirteen-year-old safely trick or treating with a younger sibling is not going to have any issues,” the website says. “That same child taking pumpkins from porches and smashing them in the street more likely will.”

News of the new ordinance drew the ire of social media critics who felt the rules would be used an excuse to target and harass Black children.

Imagine having to explain to your Black child that they can’t trick or treat because they could get imprisoned for 6 months since white and non-Black POC routinely overestimate the age of Black children,” another chimed in. “Imagine.”

One woman argued the law would give white moms yet another excuse to call the cops on Black teens and wondered what could happen to “older children taking younger siblings trick or treating, or young teens who would rather trick or treat than get drunk at a party, or individuals with developmental delays?”

The “evil” ordinance has since sparked the age-old debate about how old is “too old” to go trick-or-treating. A few cities have seemingly tried to put it to rest by imposing curfews or even threatening fines and jail time.
