Lawsuits Filed Against Landlord Over Deadly Bronx Apartment Fire

deadly bronx apartment fire

New lawsuits are being filed that seek justice on behalf of the families killed in last month’s devastating Bronx apartment fire.  Civil rights attorney Ben Crump is behind the suits which target the building owner and investors over the tragic blaze that killed 17 people, eight of them children.

Reportedly, a malfunctioning heater started the fire and doors that were supposed to close automatically didn’t, allowing smoke to escape and spread.

Attorney Ben Crump said safety rules were overlooked, adding the residents who lived in the 120-unit building were largely African immigrants, that were marginalized both before and after the blaze.

“Windows couldn’t open up, and the smoke couldn’t escape, there is no proper egress in this building where people can escape, so literally they died from their lungs filling up with smoke,” Crump revealed in a press conference, according to CBS New York.

“If these were white citizens and you had 17 people lose their lives and others catastrophically injured that we would not only be talking about civil liability and civil citations,” Crump said, according to The Hill. “We would be talking about criminal culpability.”

The defendants named in the deadly Bronx apartment fire lawsuit include three investment firms along with building owners Bronx Park Phase III Preservation and the Bronx Phase III Housing company.

This news follows Fat Joe, and Cardi B, Bronx natives, and the New York City Mayor’s Fund launching relief efforts to gather money for victims and their families.

Cardi B and Fat Joe represent for the Bronx in a major way.

Only 9 days into the New Year, a high rise fire would strike an apartment building at the Twin Parks North West in the Bronx of New York, killing 17 people. Sadly, 8 of those individuals would be children.

Overall, 44 people were injured from the fire and many took to social media to ask for help as many are houseless, some are even the last of their family following the deadly fire.

After hearing the devastating news, Cardi B stepped in to help cover the cost of funeral and burials for the victims of the tragedy. “I cannot begin to imagine the pain and anguish that the families of the victims are experiencing, but I hope that not having to worry about the costs associated with burying their loved ones will help as they move forward and heal,” Cardi B stated.  “I send my prayers and condolences to everyone affected by this horrific tragedy.”

Cardi B will be partnering with The Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City to cover the expenses for the families.

Along with Cardi B, Fat Joe would also collaborate with The Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City to provide a relief fund for victims who were impacted by the fire, getting support from Roc Nation who posted the link to Joe’s aid on their website.

“No matter where I go in the world or what I achieve, I could never forget my community,” Fat Joe stated. “I had to react, but I couldn’t do it on my own.” Fat Joe’s efforts raised 1 million dollars along with the help of other celebrities such as Jay-Z and Dj Khaled.

Although Fat Joe raised 1 million dollars, the “Lean Back” rapper shared with Pix11 that he plans on continuing to do what he can to support the victims of the Bronx fire.

“We have so much more to raise,” he stated. “These people have real lifelong issues with emotional [and] mental distress.”

Our hearts and prayers are with the victims of the tragic Bronx fire.

According to a recent article from TMZ, Bronx native Cardi B is stepping up to the plate to assist those who were affected by the fatal fire that ripped through a Bronx apartment building that killed 17 people. The “It’s Up” rapper pledged to pay for the funeral services of those who succumbed to the deadly blaze.

NYC Mayor Eric Adams said, “We are grateful for Cardi B, a real superstar on and off the mic, for granting some critical financial relief to families of the victims. The city will be forever thankful to her and also to the grassroots donors and corporate partners who have been able to offer immediate support for our neighbors in need, to reestablish themselves during this difficult time.”

Cardi says about her contribution, “I cannot begin to imagine the pain and anguish that the families of the victims are experiencing, but I hope that not having to worry about the costs associated with burying their loved ones will help as they move forward and heal.”

On January 9, an intense fire ripped through a 120-unit apartment building in the NYC Borough, killing 17 people and leaving countless others homeless. FDNY said that a broken space heater caused the fire, but fire officials said that tow inside doors that were supposed to be secured were left open, allowing smoke to fill the building.

The deadly blaze is still being investigated.
