Killer Mike Met With Backlash For Meeting With Georgia Governor Brian Kemp

Killer Mike to be Featured on McDonald's 'Voices' During 2020 BET Awards

Killer Mike is one of the more outspoken members of the hip hop community. He has been vocal about his progressive political views and even endorsed Bernie sanders in his 2016 and 2020 presidential run. Now, Killer Mike is facing some backlash for meeting with Georgia governor Brian Kemp.

“Today, Marty and I had a great meeting with @KillerMike. We discussed how small businesses and the music industry are weathering the pandemic, the value of our skilled trade workers, and our fight to end human trafficking in Georgia. We look forward to seeing him again soon,” Kemp wrote in the caption of the tweet with photos of Render and himself.

Kemp’s tenure as governor has been met with controversy. While still a candidate for governor, he was investigated for purging 300,000 voters from the state’s voter rolls. He refused to take measures against COVID-19 and even threatened to sue Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, for instituting a mask policy for her city.

In August, Kemp introduced a new law that would aim to protect police officers. This has been called tone-deaf based on the current climate in the United States.

However, the one half of the ‘Run The Jewels’ duo held his ground against people coming for him on Twitter. Some people called Killer Mike a sellout and were unsure why he decided to have a meeting with Kemp, whose whole run as governor has been riddled in controversy. However, despite being a progressive, Mike believes that change comes from engaging with people with different ideologies and ways of thinking.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp Signs Hate Crime Bill Into Law

a

On Friday, June 26, Georgia Governor, Brian Kemp, signed a hate crime bill into Georiga law, no longer making Georiga one of the four states in the U.S. to not have hate crime legislation.

The Georgia Senate and House had approved the hate crime legislation on Tuesday in a largely bipartisan vote. The hate crime legislation strengthens penalties for those convicted of crimes against people based on race, sexual orientation, or gender identity. This is the first time that Georiga has passed a law that has protected the LGBTQIA+ community.

Kemp also thanked lawmakers who jumped to crafting the legislation after the video of the murder of Ahmaud Arbery was released in May.

“Under this Gold Dome there are plenty of disagreements and division, but today we stand together as Republicans and Democrats, Black and white, male and female from rural and urban and suburban communities to affirm a powerful but simple motto: Georgia is a state too great to hate,” Kemp said.

However, this did not go without controversy. Protestors stood outside as the hate crime legislation was being passed because another piece of legislation that would protect police officers was being passed as well. Ahmaud Arbery’s mother, Wanda Cooper-Jones, was absent from the signing of the hate crime legislation because of this.

“To see the Legislature prioritize (police protections) instead of repealing citizen’s arrest is heartbreaking and does not do justice for my son,” Cooper-Jones said.

The law goes into effect on July 1. However, the hate crime law is not retroactive for crimes committed before the date.

Roc Nation Pens Open Letter to Georgia Governor Kemp Demanding Fair Trial in Ahmaud Arbery Case

Jay-Z and Roc Nation are doing their part to ensure a fair trial is conducted in the case of the 25-year-old African-American jogger Ahmaud Arbery who was shot and killed in Georgia in February.

Roc Nation credits the state for bringing murder charges against George and Travis McMichael, but the open letter is requesting that a third person, William Bryan, be brought up on charges as an armed accomplice to the crime. Bryan is reportedly the person who filmed the incident that took place in late February.

Another concern of Roc Nation as well as those seeking justice for Arbery is the perceived conflict of interest with District Attorney Tom Durden and the alleged murderer George McMichael who is a former police officer.

“In addition, we must demand District Attorney Durden recuse himself from the case, as the elder McMichael is a former police officer– a clear conflict of interest for District Attorney Durden,” the statement reads. “And calls for a special prosecutor be appointed by Attorney General Carr must be answered, to preserve the rule of law and the pursuit of justice.”

The Roc Nation statement is co-signed by Jay-Z, Meek Mill, Alicia Keys, Yo Gotti, Arbery family Attorney Lee Merritt, and Trayvon Martin Attorney Benjamin Crump. The open letter will appear in Sunday’s Atlanta Journal-Constitution, a leading news outlet in Georgia.

Stacey Abrams Receives Endorsement from Diddy for Governor of Georgia

It is no secret that Diddy has a knack for influencing history. Yesterday, the “Bad Boy for Life” took to Twitter to declare he has officially endorsed Democratic candidate Stacey Abrams for the position of governor of the state of Georgia. If Abrams campaign is victorious, she will become the first Black woman to become governor in America.

“Attention Georgia!!! I’m officially endorsing @staceyabrams for Governor,” Diddy wrote. “She is without a doubt the right person for the job. But the only way this can happen is if you get out and vote. Let your voice be heard, don’t let anything stop you from voting!! IT’S TIME TO FIGHT BACK.”

The tweet was accompanied with a video where the Hip-Hop tycoon is seen urging Georgia residents to vote for Abrams.

“It’s not just because of that. Its because she’s for the people. She’s behind the people. But right now she needs the people,” said Diddy.

Stacey Abrams is running against Brian Kemp of the Republican party for midterm elections. Hip-Hop notables have been active in support of Abrams’ historical campaign. Atlanta rap stars Jermaine Dupri, Ludacris, and T.I. have also expressed their support towards the vigorous candidate. In July, T.I. got the chance to interview Abrams for The Atlanta Voice where the two touched based matters in the likes of education reform and small businesses. According to The Cut, the campaign also received a boost from talk show legend Oprah last week when she rolled with Abrams’ team to knock on the doors Georgia residents and grace town halls.

“I’m here today for Stacey Abrams,” Oprah declared at a Georgia town hall. “I am here for the men and women who were lynched, humiliated, who were discriminated against, who were suppressed, who were repressed, and oppressed, for the right for equality at the polls.”

With the wide span of support Abrams is receiving, there is no doubt at her chance at making history.
