Last week at the Red Bull BC One Cypher USA in Los Angeles, the most prestigious, global break dancing competition, crowned Olympic hopeful, Grace “Sunny” Choi, and Francisco “Ali” Acuna Flores as the U.S. National Finalists.

Both Sunny and Ali will be repping for the U.S. in the BC One World Finals, which for the first time in 13 years will be hosted in New York City, the birthplace of hip-hop and break. This year marks the 19th edition of the Red Bull BC One World Final, as athletes all over the world train for this moment and breaking’s Olympic debut.  Red Bull BC One All Stars Logan “Logistx” Edrawho won the Red Bull BC One World Championship title in 2021, and Victor Montalvo will join the elite line-up of World Final competitors this November.

Spanning two months of electrifying battles and community events, Red Bull BC One Regional Qualifiers  kicked off in Philadelphia before touring the country with battles hosted in Austin, Orlando, Boston, and Seattle.

Following an exhilarating 16-bracket bgirl tournament, the judges crowned bgirl Sunny as the 2022 Red Bull BC One U.S. Bgirl National Champion. Grace Choi began breaking in 2008 and has collected many international wins including the 2015 Outbreak Europe B-Girl solo battle, FISE Hiroshima in Japan, and made it to the finals of the 2019 WDSF World Breaking Championships in Nanjing, China. She is currently training for the Paris 2024 Games, where breaking will make its athletic debut.

“I’m super grateful to be here, super grateful to have won this event because it means that I get to represent New York in New York. It has been a really amazing experience – I got to let loose and just be me tonight on the dancefloor and I proved to myself that that works, ” said bgirl Sunny.

In the bboy category, Salt Lake City bboy Ali reigned supreme, dominating his way through the 16-bracket tournament. Francisco Acuna Flores represents the Body Roc crew and has been breaking for 20 years.

Bboy Ali shared, “I feel really excited about winning the Red Bull BC One USA cypher so I can go to the World Finals. I’ve never been to the Red Bull BC One World Finals so this is going to be a first for me and I want to dedicate this to my dad who passed away recently.”

The evening paid tribute to west coast hip-hop and break with a performance by legendary Los Angeles hip-hop collective, The Far Side, as well as a special exhibition battle led by Red Bull BC One All Stars RoxRite and Ronnie–both lauded breaking stars, whose journeys have deep roots in California.

The film that spawned a sequel and cemented itself in pop culture, turns 37.

Breakin’ became an instant hit in the Hip Hop world for putting the dance culture on the map. The film features not only a storyline that captured audiences even outside of the Hip Hop world but some of the greatest music written at the time that was being included in the world of breakdancing.

With a cast made up of Hollywood elite and established Hip Hop players like Ice-T and dance sensation Michael Chambers a.k.a ‘Boogaloo Shrimp’, the film follows Kelly (played by Lucinda Dickey), a young jazz dancer that struggles with her style and takes it to the street with the help of her friend Adam (Phineas Newborn III). Adam introduces Kelly to two street dancers, Ozone (Adolfo Quiñones) and Turbo, who was played by Chambers, who in turn show her their dance crew and ways, and their endless competition they have with rival crew Electro Rock.

The crews in the film struggle with both their rivals, and also acceptance by Kelly’s dance instructor, who disapproves of the hybrid style the dancers perform alongside their street affiliation, but through it all, Kelly soon becomes a sensation with the crowds and finds success.

SOURCE SPORTS: Breakdancing Confirmed as Official Sport in Paris’ 2024 Olympics

Screen Shot 2020 12 08 at 9.53.32 AM

According to several news sources, breakdancing will be an official sport in the 2024 Olympics, which is set to be held in Paris.

The International Olympic Committee says the Olympic competition will feature 16 b-boy and 16 b-girls from around the world competing in 1-on-1 battles. The top three finalists will of course receive gold, silver, and bronze medals.

World DanceSport Federation president Shawn Tay said of the news, “It was a true team effort to get to this moment and we will redouble our efforts in the lead-up to the Olympic Games to make sure the breaking competition at Paris 2024 will be unforgettable.”

The International Olympic Committee also announced skateboarding, sport climbing, and surfing will also be included at the 2024 Games; three sports that were supposed to debut at Tokyo 2020.

Everyone isn’t happy about the news, with Australian squash great Michelle Martin saying that the Olympics will no longer be taken seriously until they accept other “real sports”.

“They either need to go back to what the Olympics was about and let the other sports stay outside of that because the problem is it’s having such an impact on the sports that don’t get into the Olympics now,” says the 53-year-old Martin. “The Olympics has lost what it was. Yes they’re trying to move with the times but it’s creating a mockery of the thing.”

It is said that this film single-handedly sparked the boom of Hip Hop culture in both West Germany in a time when the East and West were still separated. The film also helped the spread of graffiti culture in Across East and West Germany along with the United States.

SOURCE SPORTS: Breakdancing Could Make Its Olympic Debut At Paris 2024

Reports have confirmed that organizers are proposing to have breakdancing to be included as a sport in the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

The International Olympic Committee must make a final decision by December 2020 in regards to approving breakdancing as a sport. The other sports that are being considered are climbing, surfing and skateboarding.

The IOC likes the proposal, admitting that the proposal is part of the objective of making the Olympics great again.

“We are pleased to see that Paris 2024’s proposal for new sports to the Olympic program is very much in line with the reforms of Olympic Agenda 2020, which is striving to make the Olympic program gender-balanced, more youth-focused and more urban,” an IOC statement read.

Meanwhile, surfing, sport climbing and skateboarding are all set to make their Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020 as additional events.

Squash, snooker and chess had also launched public bids for inclusion in Paris 2024 Olympic Games but will be disappointed by the announcement Thursday.
