Beenie Man Drags Billboard for Excluding Him and Bounty Killer From Verzuz Cover Story

Beenie Man and Bounty Killer to Appear in Next Verzuz Battle for Memorial Weekend

The Verzuz battle series was one of the best things that came out of this pandemic. It shined a spotlight on many industry game-changers that aren’t celebrated enough on a mainstream scale.

Swizz Beatz and Timbaland created the platform and fans had the honor of seeing Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, John Legend, DMX, Snoop Dogg, Kirk Franklin, Alicia Keys, and more take us in moments of time on IG live. But it’s mind-boggling that the participants of highest viewed Verzuz and arguably the most entertaining one weren’t included in Billboard’s cover story.

“I guess billboard is REALLY THAT GUY 🤔,” Beenie Man tweeted. “When will DANCEHALL get it’s recognition???? Nuh matter how the impact, no matter the hard work, no matter how powerful the music is, them still try it everytime them get a chance. Ah time now man. #FixUp… Big up Swizz & Timz but this is what our genre face! Everybody fwd and tek piece and build up dem thing and then do everything to undermine the genre DANCEHALL where they got it from.”

Swizz posted an edited version of the cover including the Dancehall artists. “To our fans, while we are honored that Verzuz made the cover of Billboard, this would not have been possible without Beenie Man & Bounty Killer who set a big tone for our audience and represented for Jamaica. 🙏🏽🙏🏽,” Swizz wrote in the caption. “Thank You Billboard for the acknowledgement but, we feel this version of the cover best represents THE VERZUZ EFFECT.”

The author of the article defended herself after she was attacked online and reassured that she had no creative control over the cover.

[WATCH] Beenie Man Handles Police When They Attempt to Shut Down VERZUZ Battle with Bounty Killer

We all been to a party where the police came knocking at the door and the party was over. The VERZUZ battle between Beenie Man and Bounty Killer on Saturday night (May 23) received a knock on the door not long after the battle started and it was the boys in blue looking to shut down the event.

Were the police successful? Not at all. Bernie Man was not having it.

“Can we not do this right now? There are 500,000 people watching us right now from all over the world,” Beenie Man said to the police. “Do you want to be that guy? Do you want to be that guy? Listen, people. The police are here. But we are not stopping because before COVID-19, it was murders killing people.”

Tell em, Beenie! The dancehall legend would get the police to go and leave a parting message to them before the hits continued.

“It was people killing people then COVID-19 started, so we do this. Hey, stop, killer. Them gone out that door. The police are gone,” he said. “We got rid of them. We are Jamaicans. We are being nice. We are being good. Don’t make me stop the fight! So people, let’s do this!”

Beenie Man and Bounty Killer to Appear in Next Verzuz Battle for Memorial Day Weekend

Beenie Man and Bounty Killer to Appear in Next Verzuz Battle for Memorial Weekend

The Verzuz battle is going international! Beenie Man and Bounty Killer are the next legendary acts who will go hit for hit on Instagram live.

The announcement was made on the competition’s official Instagram page. “MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND 5/23 🚨🚨🚨@grunggaadzilla vs @kingbeenieman 🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲 Sound Clash edition🚨You ready?!? #VERZUZ”

This is a treat for all the Caribbean people and fans of the culture who aren’t going to be able to enjoy carnival or fetes this year.

The two dancehall giants clashed before at Sting in 1993. They were both teenagers and the clash eventually led to a full-blown rivalry. Their beef hit a peak when Beenie Man married Bounty Killa’s former lover, Michelle ‘D’Angel’Downer. Beenie did warn that he is the gyal dem sugar.

They’ve both gained international success and contributed to the soundtracks of our childhoods. The Grammy-award winning artists have been setting an example worthy of emulation for Dancehall acts to come.

Thankfully they figured it out and reggae fans had the chance to see them share a stage at the 2019 Reggae Sumfest. Now they’re about to go at it once more virtually. Who do you got your money on?
