A number of fires in Lousiana that occurred at churches with a sizeable Black congregation sparked an investigation that eventually moved towards the involvement of federal authorities. An arrest has been made in the fires and the lone suspect is said to be the son of a deputy sheriff.

KATC reports:

Sources confirm the suspect in the church arsons is Holden Matthews, 21. He is the son of a St. Landry Parish Deputy.

St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz tells KATC that, despite rumors, Matthews’ father did not turn his son in to deputies.

Matthews was booked at around 5:30 this evening into the St. Landry Parish jail.

We’re told that the Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office will be holding a press conference tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. Governor John Bel Edwards is expected to be there along with officials from St. Landry Parish, The FBI, and ATF.

“I’m very proud of the investigative effort that has lead to this arrest. I’m prayerful that we can close this horrific chapter and begin to heal. I’m especially uplifted by the Christian Community right now. God bless us one and all,” Congressman Clay Higgins said in a statement to KATC.

Charges for Matthews have not yet been announced.

A number of fires erupted across a Lousiana parish last month and is seemingly targeted towards Black churches. An investigation into the crimes has been launched, and early reports say the fires could be related.

NPR reports:

The fires began on March 26 in Louisiana’s St. Landry Parish, a rural community north of Lafayette. Officials have not determined the cause of the fires, but have said they are unable to rule out the possibility of arson or that the three incidents were all related.

“There is clearly something happening in this community,” State Fire Marshal H. Browning said in a statement on Thursday. “That is why it is imperative that the citizens of this community be part of our effort to figure out what it is.”

The fires caused extensive damage to the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church and the Greater Union Baptist Church in the city of Opelousas, and the St. Mary Baptist Church in Port Barre. No deaths or injuries have been reported in either of the fires.

Separately, officials say a fourth fire was “intentionally set” on March 31 at the Vivian United Pentecostal Church, a predominately white church roughly three hours north in Caddo Parish.

The ATF and FBI have joined the investigation team.

Steph Curry is teaming up with Viola Davis and Julius Tennon‘s JuVee Productions to produce a documentary about the 2015 Charleston, South Carolina church shooting. The documentary is titled Emanuel after the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal church.

TMZ reports:

“According to Curry’s production company, Unanimous Media, the documentary ‘features intimate interviews with survivors and family members who were left to grapple with this senseless act of terror.’ The movie is being promoted as a ‘poignant story of justice and faith, love and hate, and the healing power of forgiveness.’”

You’ll recall the shooter, then 21-year-old Dylan Roof, walked in on his victims during bible study and opened fire. After being captured by authorities, he pled guilty to murder charges and was sentenced to death by lethal injection.

A total of nine Black people were killed in the tragic mass shooting.
