T-Top Reveals That His Grandfather Passed While He Was At Hip-Hop Awards

Battle rap was on the big stage at the BET Hip-Hop Awards on Tuesday as North Carolina born rapper T-Top took on DNA in a live rap battle for $25,000. Later on, T-Top revealed that while he was getting the look of a lifetime, his grandfather had passed away.

“While I was on the awards tonight my grandfather took his last breaths, hope I made you proud king,” Top wrote on Twitter following the awards show. The Smack/URL battler received many well wishes from fans via social media.

Battle rap was a major highlight of the Hip-Hop awards and although T-Top didn’t win the $25,000, he did receive a lot of praise for the bars he spit on stage, some fans even felt as though he was robbed in the battle.

“No cameras because the feds like to hold that image/so tell T.I. my trap museum ain’t have no Kodak’s in it,” Top spit in his battle with DNA. Top also participated in a BET cypher giving himself the maximum exposure he could get on BET’s platform Tuesday night.

Battle Rap to Make Debut on BET Hip Hop Awards

SMACK/URLTV continues to drive the ascension of battle rap to the next level with a 4-man battle tournament confirmed for this year’s 2019 BET Hip Hop Awards ceremony featuring DNA, Geechi Gotti, T-Top and Shotgun Suge hosted by SMACK himself. With filming set for this Saturday at the Cobb Energy Performing Centre in Atlanta, Georgia before being televised on BET throughout America on Tuesday, October 8, 2019 at 8PM ET, the star-studded award ceremony to be hosted by Lil Duval will be the first time battles have taken place live on stage at a BET award show.

Although numerous and now classic BET ciphers have heavily featured battle rappers in recent years, this brief four-man URLTV battle tournament consists of one 90 second-round each per battle, with the two winners then facing off in the finals for the $25,000 prize to be judged by the crowd live in the building. These four battle rappers are among the culture’s leading at the moment, with veteran and highly viewed battle DNA taking on the rising superstar out of the west in Geechi Gotti who has had a very strong last two years in what is sure to be an entertaining encounter in this unique format.

A rematch of sorts of T-Top vs. Shotgun Suge after their classic battle in July 2015 on the ‘Redemption’ URL Card finds a welcome home on BET. T-Top had a breakout 2014 year which included a battle versus John John Da Don and taking out BET’s “Ultimate Freestyle Friday” on 106 & Park against the previous seasons’ champion Sno and the 10k with it. Shotgun Suge has been a long-running force in battle rap on SMACK/URLTV for a decade with his aggressive style and the inclusion of him will ensure that the authentic feel of battle rap will remain on stage here.

Also, brand new this year, the “Best International Flow” segment honors selected artists globally with nominees from Canada, Ghana, France, UK, and Nigeria. Internationally, these hip hop awards will air on BET Africa October 9, 2019, at 7:00PM CAT; on BET UK on October 10, 2019, at 9PM BST; on BET France on October 10, 2019 at 8:45PM CEST; and on BET South Korea October 10, 2019 at 9:00PM KST – and with it battle rap reaching potentially millions of new eyes worldwide. Tune in!

Dr. Sebi’s Family Denies Nipsey Hussle Conspiracy on BET’s ‘Black Coffee’

Prior to his death, Nipsey Hussle announced that he was working on a documentary based on Dr. Sebi and his holistic healing.

For years it has been known that the Honduran herbalist found the cure for cancer, AIDS, or HIV, and the government sealed his findings to the general public. The LA rapper was in the process of using his platform to bring Dr. Sebi’s story to life, and many conspiracy theorists believe he was assassinated for that.

But the healer’s daughter, Kellie Bowman, and grandson, Izeal Bowman, stopped by BET’s new morning show, Black Coffee to shut down the rumors.

“When Nipsey first passed, most people thought, ‘Oh, he died because he was going to put out a documentary about Dr. Sebi,’” Izeal said. “Then three hours later, they found the shooter, found the killer, then all the speculation went out the window. When negative things happen or tragedies happen, our society is always quick to jump to an opinion, instead of knowing facts.”

“So the fact that Nipsey Hussle didn’t die over doing a documentary, it makes you think, ‘Why would they want to kill Nipsey over doing a documentary if he wasn’t Dr. Sebi?’” Izeal continued. “Or he wasn’t healing people?’ Yes, he was talking about the message, but a theory on killing Nipsey Hussle? No. There is no conspiracy. Nipsey Hussle died in gang violence, something that was very tragic to our society and to hip-hop, period.”

They also credited the late Left Eye for connecting Dr. Sebi to the Hip Hop community. Additionally, they added that when Nick Cannon came on board to wrap up Nipsey’s documentary, they saw great improvement in his health after placing him on a plant-based mineral diet.

Exclusive: Tina Davis and Zaytoven Are Out to Find ‘The Next Big Thing’ on BET’s Newest Talent Show

BET Networks’ newest reality music competition series The Next Big Thing, made its premiere last week with a lot of young talented  artist trying to become the next big breakout sensation

Dame Dash, Zaytoven and Tina Davis will place 21 up-and-coming R&B and hip-hop artists through a grueling artist development boot camp designed to create bonafide superstars.

“We have reinvented the stale singing competition show for our audience,” explains Dame Dash. Handpicked hip-hop and R&B artists from across the country will compete weekly in survival-of-the-fittest challenges leading to a showdown where A&R executives, Serge Durand, Capitol Records;  Erika Coulter, Epic Records; Tuo Clark, Def Jam Records and CEO Ghazi, EMPIRE Records will have the chance to offer a record deal on the spot.

“This has never been done before and absolutely, not on this scale,” adds Executive Producer/Creator and “The League” member Tina Davis. “The finale will change someone’s life.”

Nipsey Hussle, Lil Kim, Tamar Braxton, and Joe Budden are among the celebrity artists who appear on the show as guest mentors throughout the series’ ten episodes.

When asked about what to expect from The Next Best Thing, and the need for another reality-esque, music competition tv show, Davis replied:

“We need a show like this because of this clout chasing, social media [era]. What happens is, anyone can become a star from social media now. So even in music, if you sing and do a great job, you can actually get picked up and get a deal from that.”

The Source had an opportunity to sit down with Zaytoven and Miss Davis to talk about the upcoming season of The Next Best Thing.

GO WATCH FIRST EPISODE THE NEXT BIG THING. @bet ASAP

A post shared by Zaytoven (@zaytovenbeatz) on

What drew you guys to this project?
Davis:
What drew me to this project is the fact that this show allows the artist to get the tools that are necessary for them to reinvent themselves to be great.

Zaytoven: Anytime you get a chance to deal with artist development and coaching, I’m ready to jump in, it’s what I do.

How did the concept of the show come about?
Davis: Well, I think to be honest with you. This is my first rodeo when it comes to this part of the entertainment industry. I informally talked to Holly Carter about the idea and within a couple of days, she contacted BET and had a very informal breakfast when Connie Orlando. Connie ended up falling in love with the idea and we went into production maybe a month or so later. We actually had an air date before we even really started filming. It started so fast I wasn’t prepared personally. We ended up trying to figure out who would be great to share their knowledge with these kids and we immediately thought of Zaytoven obviously because has a lot of Grammys and we thought of Dame because as music entrepreneur, he’s built a lot.

What would you guys like the audience to know about The Next Best Thing?
Zaytoven: I want people to see how getting into the game isn’t an easy task. For some reason, everyone thinks the music industry is the easiest thing to get into. Just because you think you can rap or sing, the show lets you see it’s a lot more than that. You have to be hungry and willing to learn and take criticism well and be coachable.

Davis: I would add on top of that, it definitely takes sociology, it’s a little psychology, a little bit of everything. But you sometimes have to work with an artist, a producer, or with a songwriter to pull out what is necessary to convey in that session.

What was one of the biggest challenges for the artists?
Zaytoven:
Well, I know one of the challenges for me that was difficult that I know a lot of artists today couldn’t even complete is when the artists had to create a song, write out a complete song, memorize it, and perform it in front of a crowd in less than 24 hours. You know, that’s a real challenge that a lot of people can’t do. I know a lot of artists that are popping right now that if you try to put that same task in front of them, I bet they couldn’t pull it off. So, you know, those are real challenges and I think the people watching that want to be artists, they need to see that they need to be at this level. You gotta be at this playing field to even try to make it as a successful artist.

Nowadays talent lack artist development is that something you guys are bringing awareness about on the show?
Davis:
Absolutely. Having artist development back in the day, I’m about date myself, but that’s how The Temptations learned to be great. Even in Hip-Hop, artist development allowed MC Hammer to have those incredible performances. And even Public Enemy, LL Cool J, you can look at the artist development even with Migos right now. From the first time, we saw them perform to opening the BET awards, that’s a big difference. Artist development is important to have longevity, to reinvent yourself, and this show does that.

What do you guys think about the state of Hip-Hop and R&B right now?
Zaytoven:
I feel there is room for improvement. We got to get it back to vocals and lyrics. Technology has made it a little too easy for some artists to not push themselves to the next level. A lot of artists don’t have an identity. Everybody is mimicking you know, what they hear already know, so you get a lot of this stuff that sounds the same. One thing you will see from the show is the levels that we will push these artists to be great.

Nipsey Hussle To Be Honored With Posthumous Humanitarian Award at the 2019 BET Awards

It’s a well-known fact that Nipsey Hussle was a man about his people during his short lifetime, and thankfully we’ll see him being honored for his humanitarianism during the 2019 BET Awards ceremony happening this summer.

The South Los Angeles-bred emcee, born Ermias Joseph Asghedom, will posthumously receive the Humanitarian Award for “the spirit of uplift he evoked in his community, his work as a devoted son, brother, father, partner, friend and all-around community advocate and philanthropist, musician and businessman” according to the official press release by BET.

Take a look below at how BET further sums up their decision to honor the Crenshaw legend with one of its top honors of the night:

“Over the past few months, “Neighborhood Nip’s,” work as an entertainer was only a small piece of who he was, and that would have been superseded only by his remarkable and tenacious efforts to advance his community, empowering and employing underprivileged groups through real estate investments, science and tech learning centers for teens. Nipsey’s work within his community reflects the artist outside of the world of music, and BET Networks is honored to acknowledge his work in front of his peers as well as the world of entertainment on one of its biggest nights in black entertainment and culture.”

Connie Orlando, Executive Vice-President, Head of Programming and Executive Producer for this year’s BET Awards ceremony, gave her personal reasoning with the following statement: “As a prolific artist and leader, Nipsey Hussle was zealous about driving change for the betterment of his community, empowering and employing those in need and being an influential and highly respected leader. His passing was a tremendous loss to the entertainment industry and to the culture. We will continue to remember his advocacy and be inspired by the groundwork he set forth and his dire commitment to social change. We are forever grateful, humbled and honored to have experienced his presence and we are invested in doing our part to ensure that the marathon will indeed continue. It is an immense honor for us to recognize him with this year’s Humanitarian Award.”

Be sure to tune into the 2019 BET Awards live at 8PM EST on June 23, which is also scheduled to include a Nipsey tribute performance by YG, John Legend and DJ Khaled.

Nicki Minaj Promises to Tell the ‘Real’ About Grammys on Upcoming Queen Radio Episode

A since-deleted tweet from BET’s Twitter account referenced Nicki Minaj “being dragged by her lace front” and she has since dropped out from the BET Experience and the award show.

In addition to dragging BET by their lace front, the Queen rapper took aim at Grammys producer, Ken Ehrlich, alleging that he’s the reason she never won a Grammy despite 10 nominations.

“I pissed off the same man Ariana just called out for lying,” Minaj tweeted. “Grammy producer KEN. I was bullied into staying quiet for 7 years out of fear. But I’ll tell my fans the REAL on the next episode of #QueenRadio they deserve the truth. Also, CONGRATS to everyone who won last night.”

Nicki Minaj posted her text message with Lil Wayne and he’s supporting her decision to drop from the show.

BET has since issued an apology saying the tweet was unauthorized and doesn’t reflect the company’s views on Nicki.

BET Apologizes After Nicki Minaj And Lil Wayne Threaten To Boycott The 2019 Award Show

Why post a good tweet just to delete it?

BET’s now deleted Twitter post aimed at the Pink Print rapstress after their blatant shade thrown at her looks like the all out Twitter beef between the artist and the machine has finally come to a humble truce on the part of the machine.

According to the LA Tines, BET posted a news item on the victory along with a saucy headline that read,

“Meanwhile, Nicki Minaj is being dragged by her lacefront.”

While the tweet was swiftly deleted, Minaj’s fans flooded the network’s social media accounts in support of the rapper.

Former ‘106 And Park’ Host A.J. Calloway Suspended From ‘Extra’ Amid Sexual Misconduct Investigation

According to several confirmed reports, Extra host A.J. Calloway has been suspended from his job indefinitely by Warner Brothers Television as they conduct “an internal review to determine whether there had been any misconduct by Mr. Calloway on Extra and whether any employee of the show had been the victim of any such misconduct.”

Calloway, a former host of the famed youth-driven BET video show 106 And Park, was accused by at least three women of sexual misconduct, with one of the women filing an aggravated sexual assault charge against the television host as recent as last year.

One of the other alleged victims, activist Sil Lai Abrams, says that Calloway attempted to make her touch his penis when they first met in 2006 and named him as the “B-list celebrity” who abused her in her 2007 book.

A.J is adamantly denying the accusations, issuing a statement through his lawyer saying, “Mr. Calloway maintains that these unsubstantiated allegations are patently false. He vehemently denies that he ever assaulted anyone and looks forward to clearing his name.”

Waka Flocka Announced Him & Wife Tammy Rivera are Planning to Make a Baby Next Year

Just yesterday we reported that Waka Flocka took to Instagram to attempt at squashing his beef with his long-time friend Gucci Mane, as well as any other lingering beef he may have going on with anyone else. Furthermore, Waka was a guest on Raquel Harper’s BET show, Raq Rants, and surprised us all by announcing that he has supposedly “been given up” on rap.

According to Waka, “I’ve did what I came to do. I’ve made pass $30,000,000.”

People want me to be “hard in the paint Waka” but I’m 32-years-old. I’m a grown ass man. I just want to be a good husband. I’m about to make a baby next year.”

Therefore, yes, we can expect a little bun cooking in Tammy’s oven around this time next year if not sooner. You can watch the full Raq Rants interview tonight on BET at 11p EST.
