Alfonso Ribeiro Takes Legal Action On Creators of Fortnite for Jacking Iconic Carlton Banks Dance Move

Epic Games sure does have a knack for Hip-Hop-like moves. According to TMZ, after being exposed by BlocBoy JB for jacking his “Shoot” dance and earning a lawsuit from 2 Milly from mishandling his “Milly Rock” sway, Alfonso Ribeiro is taking legal action against the creators of Fortnite for copying his iconic Fresh Prince of Bel-Air move.

On Monday, the famed Fresh Prince actor filed a suit against the developers of Fortnite, Epic Games, accusing them of biting off the dance his character Carlton Banks made popular throughout the classic series six-year run. According to court documents, Ribeiro states that the popular multi-player games released a new dance for game characters called the “Fresh emote” and it is identical to the signature dance his displayed throughout the ’90s on the Fresh Prince sitcom.

His attorney, David Hecht told the online tabloid about the legitimacy of Alfonso’s suit, overall acknowledging Epic Games improper use.  “It is widely recognized that Mr. Ribeiro’s likeness and intellectual property have been misappropriated by Epic Games in the most popular video game currently in the world, Fortnite,” said Hecht. “Epic has earned record profits off of downloadable content in the game, including emotes like ‘Fresh.’ Yet Epic has failed to compensate or even ask permission from Mr. Ribeiro for the use of his likeness and iconic intellectual property.”

Alfonso also revealed he is currently undergoing the process of copyrighting the renowned Carlton Banks dance move, ultimately leaving no room for denial. The lawsuit is reportedly nearly identical to that of 2 Milly being the common cause of intellectual theft. With this being Fortnite’s third accusation, the game’s popularity has not necessarily suffered as of yet, but only time will tell.

2 Milly Suing Epic Games For Jacking The Milly Rock & Selling It For Use In ‘Fortnite’

Rapper 2 Milly is going forward with his lawsuit against Epic Games, the studio behind the addictive video game Fortnite.

The rapper doesn’t want anyone Milly Rocking on any block in the game anymore, unless Epic Games cuts a check.

Speaking with TMZ exclusively, 2 Milly admits he didn’t know anything about Fortnite until people started hitting him up on social media telling him his dance moves were jacked and being used in the game. He added his daughter even pointed out the similar dance moves players can make their in-game characters do.

The Milly Rock didn’t start showing up in the game till season 5 back in July, and the rapper wasn’t aware his dance move called the “Swipe It” was being sold for use in the game till months after.

Per TMZ:

“The rapper filed legal docs this week against Epic Games — the company that makes Fortnite Battle Royale — for allegedly using his popular Milly Rock moves in the game without his permission to capitalize on the popular dance craze … and make a ton of cash.”

“According to the docs … Fortnite players can purchase the dance — which is called “Swipe It” in the game — for their characters. Problem is … 2 Milly claims “Swipe It” is an exact replica of his Milly Rock, but they never asked him to use it or offered to pay him for it.”

According to the docs, 2 Milly is suing Epic for legal fees and damages and wants the dance deleted from the game. The “Swipe It” is no longer being sold but if players already purchased it, they can still use it. The Milly Rock is not the only Hip-Hop dance move in the game, Snoop Dogg’s signature moves from his “Drop It Like It’s Hot” video and Alfonso Ribiero’s “Carlton dance” are also available for purchase and use in the game.

2 Milly’s attorney David L. Hecht of Pierce Bainbridge Beck Price & Hecht LLP speaking to TMZ that his firm “proud to stand up for African-American creatives whose expression and likenesses have misappropriated. Epic is enjoying record profits off of downloadable content in Fortnite, yet has failed to pay or even ask permission to use artists’ intellectual property and likenesses over many of its popular emote dances.”

2 Milly has a lot of people on his side including fellow Hip-Hop artist Chance The Rapper.

While he has allies, history isn’t on his side, and this might be an uphill battle. There is no case law surrounding the copyrighting of choreography. We wouldn’t be shocked if Epic and the rapper reached some sort of settlement. We wish him luck in getting his coins though.

2 Milly Plans to Sue Fortnite for Use of Milly Rock

2 Milly seems to be pretty cool with everyone doing his viral dance, the Milly Rock, but he isn’t down with letting others profit off of his moves without his consent. Which is why he’s the latest rapper to have beef with Fortnite, which added his dance to the game.

2 Milly told CBS News how he found out that he became a Fortnite emote, which is a dance animation that players can purchase. “Everybody was like ‘Yo your dance is in the game,’” he said. “They actually sell the particular move. It’s for purchase. That’s when I was really like ‘Oh nah, this can’t go on too long.’

As per the outlet, 2 Milly plans to sue the Epic Games-owned game franchise.

The Milly Rock is a move that 2 Milly popularized when he uploaded a video of himself dancing to it on top of a car, with a song to accompany the dance moves. The dance became the next sensation since the Shmoney Dance four years ago. The dance resurfaced after Playboi Carti mentioned it in his 2017 record, “Magnolia.”

While 2 Milly is one of the most recent artists to have their moves ripped, he’s a long way from the first. Fortnite also took Psy’s Gangnam and Snoop Dogg’s “Drop it Like it’s Hot.”
