Princess Nokia Calls Out Ariana Grande for Copying ‘7 Rings’

Ariana Grande just released her new single “7 Rings,” but it’s already drawing comparisons to other artists including Princess Nokia.

The New York rapper, whose real name is Destiny Frasqueri, has accused the pop starlet of stealing her swag by pointing out similarities between “7 Rings” and her own song “Mine” off her 2017 album 1992 Deluxe. In a video, which she posted on Twitter, Nokia first plays Grande’s track followed by “Mine.”

“Do that sound familiar to you ’cause that sound really familiar to me. Oh my God!” she says. “Ain’t that the little song I made about brown women and their hair? Hmmm… Sounds about white.”

The lyrics were also called into question. “7 Rings” is an independent anthem on which Grande flexes about being able to buy what she wants, while Princess Nokia’s “Mine” is a celebration of her hair.

“You like my hair? / Gee thanks, just bought it / I see it, I like it, I want it, I got it,” sings Grande. On “Mine,” Nokia sings, “Hair blowing in the Hummer / Flip the weave, I am a stunner / It’s mine, I bought it / It’s mine, I bought it.”

“7 Rings,” which samples The Sound of Music classic “My Favorite Things,” has also been compared to other hip-hop tracks including Soulja Boy’s “Pretty Boy Swag” and 2 Chainz’ “Spend It.”
