New York rapper A$AP Rocky is sticking to the script. The hip-hop star has reportedly pleaded not guilty to a publicized assault incident in Sweden.

According to reports, Rocky appeared in court Tuesday to announce his plea.

The trial of the recording artist and model, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, began Tuesday in Stockholm District Court. The court has also set aside Thursday and Friday for the case, but it was not clear whether the trial would go the full three days. Mayers’ mother was seen arriving at the court, and shortly after it began the performer’s lawyer submitted his plea of not guilty, claiming he was acting in self-defense. Last week, Sweden Prime Minister Stefan Löfven addressed President Donald Trump’s disses fired at his country over Rocky’s publicized incarceration.

Mikael Lindstrom, a spokesman for Lofven, responded to Mr. Trump by emphasizing the independence of the Swedish judicial system. “In Sweden everyone is equal before the law,” Lindstrom said. “The Government is not allowed, and will not attempt, to influence the legal proceedings, which are now ongoing.” (CBS News)

Trump initially went to Twitter last Thursday and didn’t hold back on letting loose on the Sweden prime minister.

According to reports, a Swedish prosecutor has charged Rocky with assault related to a Stockholm incident.

The 30-year-old — whose real name is Rakim Mayers — has been in custody since July 3, following a confrontation in the Swedish capital on June 30. The rapper’s lawyer, Slobodan Jovicic, has maintained he was defending himself after being assaulted and that his client is innocent. “We think it was self-defense, but the prosecutor has chosen to go with the injured party’s version,” Jovicic said, adding that his client is “very disappointed” that the prosecutor has “chosen to go with the other party’s version” of events.
