Day of the Dead: The Serial Killers Observe Día de Muertos with Sophomore Album

While October 31 is usually associated with Halloween,  it’s also celebrated by millions throughout the Americas as the start of the Day of the Dead (also known as Día de Muertos), which lasts until November 2. Traditions are a major part of Día de Muertos, with celebrants building private altars called ofrendas, in honor of the deceased, offering up flowers, calaveras (painted sugar skulls), foods, beverages, and other gifts.

While we aren’t dead (yet), The Serial Killers (a group comprised of Xzibit, B-Real, and Demrick) offered us the perfect gift this Day of the Dead- an album of the same name that delivers one of the best Hip-Hop experiences of 2018.

Contrary to popular belief, the Day of the Dead isn’t just about death (although paying homage to deceased family, friends, and relatives plays a large role), but it’s also largely about a spiritual journey, which is exactly what The Serial Killers deliver on Day of the Dead.

The Serial Killers couldn’t have chosen a better day to release an album that is darker in nature than most of the artists’ prior work, but with the right amount of beauty that showcases their range and talent. The multi-ethnic group effortlessly combines party rock anthems with political messages, segueing from pina coladas to police brutality in “(W)e (A)re (R)eady.” The variety from track to track keeps listener attention in a way that is borderline mystical.

Día de Muertos is about looking to the future as much as honoring the past. While The Serial Killers have all been in the game for a while, they take a break from the darker nature of the album, to introduce new artists Brevi and James Savage on “Fruit Punch.” Plus, it’s one of the few times that woodwind instruments have appeared on a Hip-Hop album.

A major Day of the Dead theme is family and the skill demonstrated on Day of the Dead shows three artists at the top of their game playing off of each other perfectly, creating the newest Hip-Hop family we didn’t know we were missing.

If Day of the Dead is any representation of The Serial Killers’ work to come, we can’t wait for the nest family reunion.

Recently, buzz developed about Meek and Offset’s wife Cardi B low-key having new music together.

Sources tell TMZ Cardi recently stepped into the studio with none other than Meek Mill to lay down some material that’ll be used in a forthcoming song. We’re told they cranked out hooks and verses — all of which is fair game for a final product that’s yet to be released. While we’re told the collab happened a few months ago, the timing is nothing short of less-than-perfect for Nicki … who’s in the middle of a good ol’ fashioned beef with Cardi. (TMZ)

50 Cent Hints At Possible Kanan Return: “”My Power Spin Off Is So Crazy”

Power Season 5 Kanan

New York rapper 50 Cent is giving fans some clues about what to expect from upcoming “Power” spin-off shows. The series’ executive producer has shared some insight on the Starz projects.

Fif went to Instagram Wednesday (October 31) to talk about the spin-off shows.

Last week, “Power” creator Courtney Kemp announced spin-off shows going into production.

According to reports, Kemp has signed a new overall wide-ranging deal with Starz’s parent company Lionsgate.

Deemed as “one-of-a-kind” agreement by Lionsgate itself, the development and production deal launches Kemp and her End of Episode shingle to expand the Power franchise with potential spinoffs among a number of commitments by Starz. Additionally, the compact encompasses other projects for Lionsgate to take to market for Kemp on a multitude of platforms. While officially no one’s offering specific terms for the deal, it is over a three-year period of time, I hear, with a very solid investment from Lionsgate. (Deadline)

Back in May, buzz developed about a potential “Power” spin-off going down with series star Larenz Tate.

theJasmineBRAND exclusively reports, Power is reportedly prepping a spin-off. Sources tell us that the series will star Larenz Tate. Tate joined the series during season 4, playing the recurring role of Councilman Tate. We’re told that Tate will be joined by other Power cast members, but their identity or involvement has not yet been revealed. (the Jasmine BRAND)

Funkmaster Flex Goes on Twitter to Double Down on His Recent Message For Drake

In case you missed it, Funkmaster Flex had a few choice words to get off his chest yesterday during the latest #Freestyle112 segment on his show, which features New York rappers Styles P and Dave East. Peep Part 1 below to refresh your memory on what got him so amped:

Now, Part 2 is where things got interesting. The legendary on-air host had some strong words for who many believed to be Drake, sending his fans to the defense of their Scorpion king. Watch the second part below, and while the freestyle is definitely worth watching, Flex starts going in around the 6:00 mark:

Of course, Flex must’ve been feeling the heat from one of the biggest fanbases around, and decided to do all but confirm that he was in fact talking about Drizzy, in addition to getting a few more verbal jabs in:

This all stems of course from Drake’s recent appearance on HBO’s LeBron James-hosted The Shop series, where the rapper weighted in on the rules to the game when it comes to battle rap. This led to Styles and Dave East commenting on the subject with great points not too long after on Ebro In The Morning, which ultimately led to where we are now on the debate.

No word on if Drake has gotten wind of any of this, but let’s hope it ends here. We can’t take another rap beef in the culture right now.

Has Jimmy Butler Played His Last Game for the Timberwolves?

Jimmy Butler is not playing in the Timberwolves’ game on Wednesday night against Utah. It’s the latest step in a six-week standoff between the disgruntled All-Star and the team that has not yet granted his wish to be traded, According to Shams Charania, the move is part of Butler’s plan to get traded as soon as possible and it could lead to an extended absence beyond tonight’s game against the Utah Jazz.

Charania notes that Butler started contemplating not playing tonight on Tuesday, and the final decision was made Wednesday morning when he informed coach Tom Thibodeau of his decision. That said, the Wolves are explaining Butler’s absence for tonight’s game as “general soreness and precautionary rest.”

In six games this season, Butler leads the Timberwolves with 22.5 points per game, in addition to 5.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 3 steals. The Timberwolves, 3-4, will host the Utah Jazz tonight before embarking on a five-game road trip that includes a trip to Oracle Arena on Friday night, followed by matchups against the Portland Trail Blazers, Los Angeles Clippers, Lakers, and Sacramento Kings.

The Houston Rockets recently made an offer for Butler that included four first-round picks but, according to ESPN’s Malika Andrews, league sources suggest that any potential offer from Houston must also include shooting guard Eric Gordon.

It’s unfortunate that the Timberwolves and Butler can’t see eye to eye on this one. The longer the drama continues between both parties, the less likelihood is there for a fair equal trade value.

10 Scariest Rap Feuds in Hip-Hop History

What’s beef? Well, it’s one of the most synonymous occurrences in Hip-Hop that, regardless of how much people try to protest it, gets factored into the culture on a level of near entertainment. Basically, we really can’t just all get along. Sometimes though, rap wars can get a little scary.

Some of you may be at this very moment getting the popcorn ready for the next Nicki Minaj vs. Cardi B round, but at the core of it all there are two influential women in Hip-Hop going to blows (literally just a few months ago!), that left the latter rap queen receiving death threats on her infant daughter, allegedly by way of the fanbase of the former rap queen. Honestly, it shouldn’t have even got to that level.

As we celebrate the spooky festivities of Halloween today, let’s look back a few scary instances in the history of Hip-Hop beefs that left us feeling like shook ones. Let’s hope it never get as deep as these 10 unfortunate lyrical battles:

10. YG VS. TEKASHI69

What Had Us Shook:
This one is fairly new and probably still going on, but YG, known for his well-documented Blood Gang affiliation, and Tekashi, who throws up signs and reps Tr3yway whenever he can, almost turned this rap war into a full-out #GangGang situation. Any time a beef goes down that route, we can’t help but be fearful of the outcome.

9. KENDRICK LAMAR VS. NEW YORK

What Had Us Shook:
Known to many as the greatest of his generation, Kendrick Lamar made a huge proclamation with his “I’m the King of New York” line on that infamous “Control” verse heard all throughout Hip-Hop. The scary part wasn’t even the actual rappers from NYC that came for his neck — many kept quiet, and the few who did step up didn’t do the Big Apple much justice — but the actual people of New York almost denounced Kung Fu Kenny. It was a bit touch and go there for a bit, but luckily K. Dot’s talent shined through and he avoided a damn-near ban from the five-borough-strong rap mecca — even headlining HOT 97’s Summer Jam this past summer. He might still have a few hitters in BK a bit salty, though.

8. AZEALIA BANKS VS. …EVERYBODY

What Had Us Shook:
It’s scary to just watch Azealia constantly dig herself into a deeper black hole as an industry outsider with every beef she gets herself into — she usually is the one starting it, too! Like, honestly, who beefs with a 4’11, cute-as-a-button Disney Channel star?! Next up: Azealia Banks vs. Mickey Mouse. Smh.

7. LIL KIM VS. FOXY BROWN

What Had Us Shook:
To have these ladies on our own cover (Feb 1997; No. 89), just to see them years later beef on wax and then go through that horrible HOT 97 incident that actually sent Kim to prison left a huge damper on Hip-Hop. Unfortunately, things haven’t repaired between these two still, and it’s probably set the tone for all these other “Battle of the Femcees” that we’ve been seeing recently.

6. STAR VS. DJ ENVY

What Had Us Shook:
Everyone knows that kids are strictly off limits, so when Star got on air and made crude comments about Envy’s wife and made a statement about his daughter that we’d rather not repeat, things could have easily turned for the absolute worse. We’re glad Envy was able to take the higher road here, but it send chills down our spine to think of what could’ve happened if someone acted on Star’s request.

5. SHADY/AFTERMATH VS. MURDER INC.

What Had Us Shook:
Sure, this was primarily “50 Cent vs. Ja Rule,” but crews, affiliates and label support from both sides contributed to some real-life tribulations for both parties involved. We may not ever really know what happened that night at the Hit Factory 18 years ago, but it’s still enough drama there to have 50 buying 200 front row sets to Ja Rule’s latest concert just so they stay empty. Damn, homie!

4. NWA VS. ICE CUBE

What Had Us Shook:
We hate to see family feud, especially when both sides are equally legendary and reckless behind the mic. The song title “No Vaseline” alone should send shivers down your spine. Thankfully, this was one beef that was able to both be repaired and turned into Hollywood gold with 2015’s Straight Outta Compton movie — all surviving members contributed to the script, united and better than ever.

3. JAY-Z VS. NAS

What Had Us Shook:
The scariest thing here is that it involved two of our favorite MCs and, still, you can’t really determine who really won. Of course “Ether” ate “Super Ugly,” but it also ended with Hov literally becoming the president of Esco’s label. We don’t even want to get into the lyrical shots — let’s just leave “baby seats” and “Hawaiian Sophie fame” in the past!

2. “THE BRIDGE WARS” (BOOGIE DOWN PRODUCTIONS VS. JUICE CREW)

What Had Us Shook:
As one of the earliest rap feuds in the history of Hip-Hop, it’s still one of the most disturbing. This went far beyond chains, fighting over women or dissing rap skills; this was for the territorial ownership of rap. Had things gotten too serious between the two pioneering crews, it could’ve left a dent on the rap game that we’d still be trying to recover from. Scary thought, indeed!

1. TUPAC VS. THE NOTORIOUS B.I.G.

What Had Us Shook:
Unfortunately, our biggest fears came true in this rap war: neither side made it out alive. When it comes to Tupac Shakur and Christopher Wallace, we’re positive that the “what if’s,” “why’s” and multiple regrets fill those involved on a daily basis. If there’s one example of why beef shouldn’t go down in the first place, the loss of these two icons is the best example you’re going to get. R.I.P…

Let us know some of the rap feuds that had you shook by sounding off over on Facebook and Twitter!

The Beastie Boys sat down with SiriumXM host Gray Rizzy recently to talk about their new memoir, cookbook included. The ’70s hip-hop group collaborated with Chef Roy Choi to share some delicious recipes with fans, as a part of the Beastie Boys Book.

Ad-Rock tells Rizzy how their partnership came about in the new episode that airs today, October 31:

“Oddly, a lot of our lyrics, we talk about food all the time. Mike has a friend that is now my very good friend. I took his friend, Roy Choi, an amazing chef, and we were just coming up with ideas for the book and we’re like ‘Oh we talk about food so much, let’s have a cookbook.’”

“Roy Choi, he went and took a bunch of lyrics and got inspired by those and made a bunch of recipes,” he adds.

The Beastie Boys Book is a nearly 600-page memoir that tells the story of their band. In addition to their life experiences and a cookbook, complete with illustrations, it also includes essays from Amy Poehler and Wes Anderson. Watch them talk about it in the clip above.
